Firstly, I salute InsideIIM’s mission to educate the aspiring millions who are investing their millions, looking to enter the hallowed portals, about the ground realities. As someone who has had the chance to view 3 full-fledged placement processes up close and received feedback from such processes in other IIMs, I wish to do my part in this meaningful endeavour.
‘The bird who dares to fall is the bird who learns to fly.’ Since the last year, I was trying to find some time out when I could take a deep breath and try to decide at least one learning for life from my 1st year of MBA at IIM Nagpur. MBA life is a nonstop race, and one has to collect as many pebbles he/she can from the vast seashore of knowledge in a limited time period of 2 years. If someone asks me, what is that one thing I learned in the last year, without a doubt, I would say it’s that ‘There is a tradeoff in everything.’ Be it in your learnings about several functions of a business or your life and career decisions. I would like to discuss two tradeoffs I had to make in the last year. I hope this can help some, especially the MBA aspirants who are still thinking if IIM Nagpur is worth it.
All CAT aspirants have one thing in common; they are energetic, encouraged, and they dream of getting into one of the Premier Management Institutes in India.
People never seem to reveal a lot about what happened in their MBA programmes when asked. Other than the usual tiny tidbits & the proverbial “it’s something you need to experience” & “those were the best 2 years of my life”, there’s not really a lot they tell you before going on a nostalgia trip in their minds, reminiscing about the golden days. As someone who was knee-deep in UPSC preparations only a year ago, this sudden shift to MBA did catch me flat-footed and I was heavily underprepared on what to expect from the program. Apart from the typical 20 somethings’ mind muddled with, in the words of CS Lewis, “a zoo of lusts, a bedlam of ambitions, a nursery of fears, a harem of fondled hatreds”, I was pretty much a clean slate when I came here. That didn’t make me any less excited or anxious about it though.

Sipping my coffee I couldn’t help but notice my BlackBerry beeping with its iconic red notification light. Turning attention away from the conversation I saw the mail from IIM Jammu, and it’s an offer letter for the PGP program. It was a very different feeling, as I was looking forward to pursue my MBA after 8 years of long IT career and was present with IIM Jammu as one of the options. And I decided to take up this as an opportunity which will be out of my comfort zone.
