How I Improved my Quantitative Ability Percentile?
“Life is more manageable when thought of as a scavenger hunt as opposed to a surprise party” - Jimmy Buffet I write this article to capture the various pieces of learnings I have gained over my journey of CAT, as a part of my scavenger hunt to land up in “The Red Building of Dreams” and to help MBA aspirants and students better their strategy.
I am a current 1st year MBA student at IIM Rohtak. I would like to share my journey from scoring very low marks in my 10th, 12th, and graduation to my CAT preparation and getting into an IIM. I belong to a small city in Maharashtra. I did my schooling and graduation in Maharashtra itself. I scored 79% in Xth class and 54% in XIIth class with a science background. I was not interested to continue with the science field after XIIth so I shifted to commerce. I enrolled myself in Chartered Accountancy (CA) course. It took me many attempts to write the CPT exam which is the foundation exam of the CA course but was in vain. I didn't clear the CPT itself. I successfully wasted my 3 years over that. Till then I had not taken admission into B.COM. I took admission into B.COM 3 years after passing the XIIth class. Till then I dropped out of the CA course and started focussing on completing my graduation. after completing 1st year of B.COM, there was a gap year before 2nd year due to personal reasons. So, I finally completed 3 years of B.COM in 4 years. So, it can be seen that I completed my graduation 7 years after passing the XIIth class. During my graduation, I developed an interest in equity investments and trading. I am doing it still now.
Practice! Practice! Practice! I remember myself thinking day and night about the sections of CAT, and how to ace it. Thankfully I had my mentors from a coaching institute and online portals like InsideIIM that helped me through my journey. More importantly, they helped me keep my confidence up even when I was on the verge of losing hope. It's tough to realize the toil one has to put emotionally when you're continuously scoring low in mocks.
When going through any MBA related website in India, we see a lot of articles like "How to ACE the CAT," "Crack the CAT in 60 days," and so on. Along with the MBA prep centers, these make it seem like CAT is the final hurdle, overcoming which you can get into your dream B-School for an MBA. The newspapers also don't help much. 1st or 2nd-page articles highlighting the number of 100 percentilers from the city/state are published just after the CAT results are declared. And, most aspirants reading them think just like other entrance exams, cracking CAT will get them into their dream institute(in this case, a B-School).
At the time of writing this article, I realized, a year ago around the same time I started my CAT preparation and had only 100 days before the D-Day.
Besides the mark that Lee left on the so-called modern pop culture and the world of superhero comic books and entertainment, Lee is also a fantastic example of collaborative work. He called it the “Marvel Method.”
