Vertigo – how to be friends with a devil? #IIMT
One of the major challenge I faced so far is tackling with a health condition called BPP-Vertigo. Most of us knows vertigo as a condition associated with mountain sickness or travel sickness. But for me it is an irritating devil which hampers my day to day life. I experience severe episode even if I am ideally sitting at home. All started when in the last year of my graduation. One fine morning I had the first ever episode of my life. It was dramatic. I was bedridden for two weeks, facing difficulty even to use restroom. Since it happened when I was committed to my fifth year thesis work on Cancer Biology, I had to take a break from it. The result was a downfall of my grade in my first semester project evaluation. I was disheartened by it since I have been focusing on the project every other day. A physical hindrance affecting my work life was something which I never expected. Being a dancer I am, doctors put me in a routine where I am supposed to not take any such tasks. For a year, my life was filled with multiple episodes of vertigo, the hospitalization following that, skipping laboratory schedules and emotionally getting vulnerable. But on the course of time, I started realizing that physical illness can be managed if you figure out how to do works in different paths. I replaced my physical absence in laboratory with computational works. This not only gave a better insight to the project I was working on but also presented me immense appreciation from my project mentor. Then the next question was how to deal with it on a daily basis. I started talking every other person in my life, be it be friends or strangers or social media platform, hoping to find someone who experience it with the same intensity. The outcome was unimaginable, I was able to find a huge crowd who faces the same problem, or even who successfully tackled it and living a normal life. From the various suggestions poured on me from them, I understood what to do and what not to do when you have BPP- Vertigo. Today I am a part of an institute where lack of sleep, stress, etc. plays an integral role in the life; this can lead to reoccurrence of my condition. But I am confident enough that I will be able to manage it as I have collected and implemented the necessary aspects to tie that devil, when it comes next time I will welcome him with gentle smile and make sure that it is leaving away from me as soon as possible. Embrace the difficulties and make it as your own comfort zone!
