Aditya Birla Group: The Big in our lives, SJMSOM

Aditya Birla Group: The Big in our lives, SJMSOM

When our forefathers were fighting for freedom, one man had the vision to build a nation to live free. Seth Shiv Narayan Birla, son of a local tradesman in Pilani, began his quest for glory by moving out of his hometown and being one of the earliest cotton traders in the country. He began trading with China by-passing the British middlemen and made a fortune for his family. Thus began the inception of the Aditya Birla Group by a 17-year-old son of a local tradesman in 1857.

Aditya Birla Group, an Indian Multinational conglomerate operating in 35 countries, does not need any introduction as most of us already know about it. From fashion to telecom, cement to non ferrous metal Aditya Birla Group is being present in all sphere of our lives. Without ABG, I can’t imagine the development of infrastructure in India. Either through cement for building or copper wire from Hindalco for railways, everything is possible by their efforts. I felt its first presence in my life in my school days as Freshwrapp. My mother used to wrap  food with it for lunch. I felt the warmth of mother’s love even hours after it was packed. During my summer vacation, I along with my family always go to grandfathers’ house where I used to see my uncles using Birla Balwan fertilizers in the field of paddy. This was second interaction with Aditya Birla Group’s product. Although I was too young to know or understand parent company of any product but I remember an incident about it. We, siblings, used to try to lift up the fertilizer sack to help our parent one by one. One who was able to do so, was called as Balwan or stronger. I have been wearing Louis Philippe’s shirts and VanHeusen blazer since my college days.

The Ever-present influence of ABG in my life - Manas Rastogi, IIM Visakhapatnam

From shopping at Pantaloons for Van Heusen formal suits to watching my relatives ask for UltraTech Cement to build their dream homes, Aditya Birla Group has had a strong and ever-present influence in my life. From Peter England shirts to Allen Solly Jackets; from Forever 21’s jeans to Liva’s comfortable range of clothes for females, I, along with my family has shopped at ABG brands for a long time without even realizing that they were all under the same umbrella group. Not only the ABG is involved in fashion retail and branded clothing for all but is even more famous and recognized in heavy industries of cement and metalworks while also providing financial services through Aditya Birla Capital. The telecom operator we use to manufacturing the inputs for various products we consume, ABG has quietly spread its reach to almost 34 countries and met every customers’ expectations with great aplomb. I believe that everyone in India has been influenced by ABG through its products or their social work for the benefit of the people.

We live in a world where technology has penetrated into every nook & corners and the most basic amenities like food, shelter and clothes is something more than just a necessity. Isn't the quality food the utmost choice of health conscious people or lavish homes a status symbol or latest trends in fashion the dire want of the millennial. How the ABG group has been very successful in our transformations is itself a story. Let me begin with mine. Since my childhood, I have been a fashion geek and maybe a trendsetter for my small circle. I used to imitate actors and their dressing sense in my real life despite the standards of my life stood nowhere around the celebrities. I always used to wear branded clothes and even now the prominent brands as Allen Solly, Peter England, Pantaloons and People to satisfy my fashion hunger. Who can forget the creative ads of Ultratech cement and whole family watching it together not only to think and build their homes but their dreams. Back in the mid-2000s, it was still a privilege having a cellphone and I remember "Idea" was the first network which fulfilled my dream to connect with my family. Coming to recent times, I have had the fortune to serve ABG's Utkal Alumina as our client when I was working at Ecolab. It was a great experience altogether working closely with intellect people there, the culture and bond we shared and most importantly the clean and green environment which is hard to see in other chemical industries. Be it the fashion or the home or the workplace, ABG has been an integral part and the base on which much of my dreams, needs and wants have been based. On top of personal glory comes the Indianness. Anything for a national cause deserves the respect and ABG has been way ahead here too. ABG has not only saved millions of life and treated patients building a healthy India but also provided schools, mid-day meals and solar lamps to the children, the future of the country. Together with ABG, we foresee a fostering nation with countless fulfilling dreams.
