College Ka Pehla Din- Vedika Goenka, SIBM Pune

The air was filled with immense zeal and nervousness. It was the first day of my MBA at SIBM Pune. In the girls’ hostel, girls rushed from one room to the other, deciding what to wear for the first day, trying out numerous outfits, seeking validation from their friends on how they look. Because first impression is the last impression, we all wanted to dress our best. In between all this chaos, I felt confident wearing my formal outfit from Van Heusen. As one of the Van Heusen campaign rightly says one is always mission ready with Van Heusen. I am really picky about my clothes because I stand by the words of American designer Rachel Zoe “style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.” There are certain brands that do not offer just products but they offer value added products that align with consumers’ own value and that makes it distinct from the other brands offering same products.

When I never had any conscious idea of what the corporate world was or any awareness of any big corporates, TATA and Birla were the two most reckoning words that I could still remember. They gave me the impression that they were something larger than life individuals until I happened to realize what those names mean. Especially the journey of Aditya Birla Group which was conceived by Seth Shiv Narayan Birla in the year of 1857 has established itself as one of the prestigious Indian Multinational Conglomerates that our country has ever produced.

One can go on speaking about the legacy of the conglomerate ABG and about the multitude of brand offerings it has. However, I believe, this is something that we all are already in awe of. My two cents on the same won’t be a value addition and hence, I would straightaway like to speak about my experience with ABGs first line of business- the Grasim Industries Limited and its innovative product Liva-the Viscose staple fibre, which has brought a revolution in the Indian style of dressing.

I have been lucky enough to be surrounded by people who made me realize the importance of positive thinking since my childhood. Coming from a middle class business family, I have seen few ups and downs in my life. But what I have learnt from my father is that no matter how tough things get in life, you always keep a smile on your face and hope for positive things to happen. Being a bit short tempered and impatient, I wanted to find a way to be calm and mature about things in life and this is when my aunt recommended me to read books on positivity. She has always advocated the importance of having a positive attitude in life and this advice changed the way how I looked at life. There on wards, I started to read a lot of books on positivity written by famous author’s like Rhonda Byrne, Robin Sharma, Gaur Gopal Das and many others. It made me realize how inner peace is the most important thing and if you can train your brain to think in a positive manner, it can do wonders for you. Few things that I have actually inculcated in my real life after reading these books include taking out time for yourself, introspecting on things that you do in your daily life and showing gratitude to others. There are little things which we often ignore in life because we get it so easily but being thankful for them is important. It can be as simple as complimenting other people to expressing love for your family.  Sometimes doing such small things brings happiness to others as well as yourself. Keeping a positive attitude in life is always helpful as you look at the glass half full rather than half empty. I started believing in law of attraction i.e. whatever you give out to the universe comes back to you and If you think positive, you attract positive people. I continue to read and watch motivational videos which helps me to stay humbled and happy with whatever I have.
