Dream Companies – Final Part – InsideIIM Recruitment Survey 2015

Dream Companies – Final Part – InsideIIM Recruitment Survey 2015

We close this year’s slew of survey reports with one of its most awaited sections: the list of “dream companies” which all of us aspire to (or have aspired to) work for at some point in our careers. Given the natural order of minimizing entropy, MBA students tend to focus on specific domains while making critical career choices. However, there are a few companies that transcend the barriers of domains/sectors and are representative of the ultimate pinnacle of achievement, with which most of the individuals in this trade attach a lot of importance. In this regard, one must truly acknowledge the achievements of the firms that enjoy such an exalted status as they have not only succeeded in catching the B-school ‘pulse’ but also have repeated doing so year after year. The time-tested stories regarding how students have burnt a lot of midnight oil to prepare that “perfect CV” which can fetch them a short-list from one of their “dream companies” further corroborate the immense appeal enjoyed by these firms. In fact, given the basic tripartite segregation underlying our survey, the significant extent of overlap between the lists for the different respondent segments (witnessed in the past editions) does succeed in driving home the fact that breaking into the list is nigh impossible. So, has the overlap rolled into this edition of the survey as well? Let’s find out!

Most Preferred Consulting & General Management Recruiters - Part IV - InsideIIM Recruitment Survey 2015

Ever since the Global Financial Crisis led to a complete hiring freeze in the bulge-bracket investment banks, strategy consulting roles have uniformly gained more favour with the students of the select institutes which traditionally have had access to both of these “premier” roles. Although banks still find favour with those who are quantitatively inclined, consulting offers intellectually challenging work with a lot of breadth. Furthermore, consulting firms, being relatively inured to the vagaries of financial markets’ performance, tend to hire at a uniform rate each year. In addition to these external factors, MBA grads are now content with being affluent, rather than being obscenely rich albeit with a significant quantum of risk. Thus, by virtue of all these factors, consulting has emerged as the most highly rated vertical in the latest edition of the InsideIIM Recruitment Survey. However, one must take cognizance of the fact that it is only the “strategy consulting” which are perceived as very lucrative and not implementation/process consulting. In this regard, one must also acknowledge that these strategy consulting firms in big numbers only from 3/4 campuses in India wherein only the best profiles make the cut.

The past editions of the InsideIIM Recruitment Survey have always given a notion that the halcyon days for the investment banks are over. This year’s survey, however, serves as an inflection point for the very same connotation because although, the BFSI industry has not received the top billing from the respondents, one can see a major improvement in its overall ranking. It primarily owes its success to the rather sanguine outlook ascribed to it by two categories, viz. MBA aspirants & 1st year students and post-MBA professionals. The relative scarcity of on-campus finance roles may be reasoned as the prime driver for the lower ratings received by the BFSI sector from the Class of 2016, wherein no bank apart from Morgan Stanley features among even the top 10 firms.

It’s time to proceed to the more ‘sombre’ part of the survey which intends to profess a gritty take on a host of issues that hold paramount importance with regard to MBA students, employers as well as employees. Given that the questions in this segment pertain to the intricacies of career choices, only the current crop of second year MBA students and the post-MBA professionals have been allowed to answer them in order to conserve data quality. Those who have been excluded from the sample set should leverage upon this report to derive valuable insights from those who have seen it up close and personal. We hope that, by virtue of the analysis presented herewith, we can abet individuals in making tough career calls and hopefully help a considerable chunk escape from the woes of a ‘herd mentality’.
