A simple suggestion by my mom, a few years back, -"Go and give it a try, don't always depend on your instincts about your preparation. Who knows, you may be more deserving than you think" - changed the course of my life.
You read that right. We, Crows (yes we call ourselves that), just need a reason to celebrate. It is nothing new or unknown that the b-school life is full of rigour. Be it academics, live projects, extra-curricular activities or placements, the IIM life is full of commitments (and mind you that nothing less than 100% would work).
Note: This research was done by Krishna Kunal and me during our Summer Internship. Governments that have completed at least 3 years have been considered.
The acronym VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, Ambiguity) has found a prominent place in the current business environment with every advisor, leader and analyst splitting hairs over the possible drivers of the same trying to put their finger on the pulse of the situation and advocate their two cents on the possible measures to be undertaken to better prepare your organization for such changes.
The 81-year-old Father Oswald A J Mascarenhas aka Father Ozzie, as he is lovingly called by everyone, is the JRD Tata Chair Professor of Business Ethics at XLRI. Professor Ozzie did his MBA from Wharton in 1974 and then finished his doctorate in Finance and Marketing from Wharton in 1976. He joined XLRI on December 26, 1976 and was teaching Consumer Behaviour till 1983. He then left XL and joined the University of Detroit Mercy as the Charles H Kellstadt Chair of Marketing and Ethics. It was the summer of 2017, when I set on the path of becoming a business leader by getting an admit to SIBM Pune, right after completing my graduation. I was really passionate about curating and writing content, but destiny had other plans in mind. Joining a top tier B-School surfaced plethora of opportunities, and opened new avenues to explore, but time was limited and I wanted to do a lot. I was faced with a big dilemma, or say a business challenge about where to put my means to have the maximum return on investment. Now, talking about the options at hand, my YouTube channel by the name, ‘Bibhav Singh’ had surpassed a thousand subscribers, on the other hand, academic and guest lectures were taking a toll on the diurnal cycle, and lastly, my mailbox was flooded with corporate competitions.
While daytime finds him donning the cap of a management professional, spending hours in the corporate on a daily basis, it is in the night, when the writer in him unleashes. In the relentless pursuit of a profession, it often happens that we fail to honour the commitment to those childhood dreams that we painted in the canvas of the mind. Ankit Jaiswal, the author of ‘The Fragile Heart’ and ‘Hope v/s Hype’ is not one of them. Stories, conversations and poetry have always fascinated him more than anything else. He released his first book ‘The Fragile Heart’, a young-age fiction, during his pre-MBA days and went on to launch his second book ‘Hope v/s Hype’, a contemporary political drama, during his IIMU days. A marketing enthusiast and an alumnus of IIM Udaipur, he holds a master’s degree in management and currently juggling between his roles of manager and writer impeccably. Here is a candid interview with our esteemed alumnus and storyteller and find out what he has to say about his love for writing and his journey as a writer.
