Strategies to Keep Students Motivated and Focused
As most of us know, students have a little focus length as against adults and even though, the thought about a particular goal is instilled in their minds, it becomes important that they should be kept motivated to move them towards their goal. Generally, the best learning materials, books and lessons cannot help in holding the motivation aspect in kids and they won’t gain self-motivation to put forth their utmost efforts. So, both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation becomes important and teachers can play an important role in encouraging children. Even though, it is true that it is much easier to say than done, regardless of whether you are an experienced or a new teacher, a lot of efforts and time should be spent in understanding about each student in such a way that he/she can be motivated accordingly. Here are some simple strategies that will help teachers to keep their students motivated and focused:

Being Average - Story of a SJMSOM, IIT Bombay Student
I remember an instance during an interview when I was asked that what the defining moment of my life was. I was caught off-guard. Not because I didn’t have an answer to that question. The reason why I was stumped by the question was that I knew I had no such ‘defining moment’, what I didn’t know was how to reply back. After several awkward moments of silence and stares, I managed, “No. I can’t think of anything right now, Sir”. The disappointment on his face showed. Supposedly, such an answer was not commonplace as the interviewer told me that I should have prepared better, and I should know myself better. With a restrained smile I answered, “Sir, I do know what I’m talking about. It isn’t such, that every action I took in my past was guided by motivation. Even so, if you want, then for the sake of answering, I can concoct a story about the same, but it wouldn’t be true”. My interview was over shortly thereafter, and it goes unsaid that I wasn't selected.

“Next destination – DMS IIT Delhi”, was the end note in the farewell mail that I wrote to my colleagues at work in June 2013. And today, I have only a few more months left to spend at DMS. Looking back I realize that DMS wasn’t just a destination, but it was a jam packed journey altogether. A journey that led me to stretch, test and push my limits, gather a vast amount of experience and obtain a fresh perspective on life.
