My “summer” internship at Panasonic India was ironically a wintry experience within an air-conditioned chamber that of a size of a telephone booth! Hailing from a hilly region of Uttarakhand, it gave me a homely feeling in some peculiar manner. For me, Panasonic was an unprecedented bliss. Perhaps the best part of my junior year in MBA.
I remember sitting on the eight floor of the Brigade Magnum Building the same way I remember my first day of college and school: excited, anxious, but out of place as if I didn’t belong. More than being tensed, I was energetically sitting tight for the 3rd April with umpteen excitement and vitality to set out on my part as a summer intern at one of the most valuable brands in the world. With high expectations, I entered the very secured and holy passageways of HCCB.
Placement Season had just started! Getting shortlisted for the companies and making it to GD round and then getting rejected. That’s what was happening with me on the first day of my placement! Rejection after Rejection. I have had enough. But struggle makes you better and better. Precisely, that’s what happened with me. The same night I still remember the room full of aspirants waiting for the emails of the companies for getting shortlisted for further rounds. I receive yet another email which shortlisted 7 student profiles out of 170 students then remaining to get placed. This time I had a Skype call with the CEO of the company for a Marketing Profile.
In a royally decorated, magnificently built common hall, away from the city’s searing temperature, It was the ‘Qualys Security Conference, 2017 at hotel The Leela, Mumbai,’ hosting some of the country’s best hacking minds and the Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) of the biggest companies in the world.
I interned at the Credit Card Division of the Yes Bank. It is a relatively new and rapidly growing business division of the bank which was launched just about a year ago. The project was vital for the bank and aimed at helping in gaining larger market share coupled with more visibility for the YES Bank Credit Cards.
I had always been in one city, Bangalore. I was always a home-boy. When I got admission to IIM Ranchi, it was my first time away from home, my first time outside Karnataka. I had spent the entire first year at Ranchi. When my internship at AstraZeneca Pharma was confirmed, I was told that I would be posted at headquarters in Bangalore. It was to be my first visit back home. My parents’ joy knew no bounds! Their son was going to be back!
When it is your first corporate stint, what are the words that define your desires? Brand value, decent pay, awesome work culture, multinational... All these words encompassed and were deeply imbibed in my summer internship workplace - Tata Steel, the 8 billion dollar behemoth owned by the biggest corporate house of India known for its ethics, stature, value for employees and also produces category defining Steel. The silver lining on the cloud was the internship location : Global Marketing Headquarters of Tata Steel in Kolkata – The sugar-coated City of Joy.
Penning down my internship experience feels like an adrenaline rush, bringing back the memories of what I suppose was the most intense learning experience of my MBA graph so far. In my engineering days, I had missed the opportunity of sitting for the campus recruitment of Cummins India since I was already placed. So, when I bagged the summer internship at the same company after five years, I was amused at the games destiny plays with us.
