I joined MDI Gurgaon on June 14, 2018. It was a new place, with a different vibe. I was feeling proud of myself for joining such a respected institution, thinking that my life will be smooth sailing from now on… I couldn’t have been more wrong! Starting 15th we had the Induction Week, which I thought would be very easy going in the beginning, but soon realised that it was quite the opposite. It included many different corporate sessions, late night sessions with seniors, introductory sessions with faculty, etc. Coming from a relaxed IT job I felt as if there was no time to breathe. Three-hour sleep became a normal habit, and I learnt to prioritise work over food.
After the induction week, the classes started, and we were being taught subjects I had almost no prior knowledge of. But even then, I was able to follow (thanks to the amazing faculty) all of the subjects and life became quite easy again… until I was appointed Deputy Class Representative for my section. I started taking up responsibility for many different tasks, and parallelly, the number of assignments started growing. I started losing sleep again.
I had just become accustomed to the new life, and that’s when the “King of Kings” was announced – MDI’s inter-section Sports Tournament. This was a chance for me to showcase my passion for 8 ball Pool, and I applied for volunteering for the Pool/Snooker division. And within two days, I became the overall coordinator of the sport. Meanwhile, I was also chosen to lead my section’s Pool team, and the Design Team (to design the T Shirts, posters, etc.). Now I was a part of around 20 different WhatsApp groups handling multiple tasks at the same time.
When the stress started piling up again, there was a time I felt that it was impossible to take up so many roles simultaneously, and I should concentrate more on academics. But then I realised that MBA is not just another post-graduation degree, it’s about managing yourself and your environment. I though that if I am able to manage all these responsibilities along with academics, I will come out stronger than before. So, I started planning ahead, managing time and people, and taking firm decisions.
All these new experiences broke my preconception about MBA and made me realise that I should take up more and more responsibilities in order to challenge myself and break all my mental limits I have set for myself. Keeping that in mind, I feel I would like to join a big FMCG company like the Aditya Birla Retail Limited, where I would have a chance to work and collaborate with people from different products and understand how all the diverse range of products is managed so efficiently.
