I have always been that quiet, shy and introvert girl who liked to be around just a handful of familiar faces. It took a lot of courage for a person like me who had glossophobia, a fear of public speaking or speech anxiety, to come on stage while innumerable eyes are on you. As I used to stand on stage and face the audience, my heart started beating faster and blood start rushing all over my body. Whenever I tried to overcome this fear I felt more nervous, my palms start sweating, my stomach ties itself into knots and I felt like giving up and finishing it as soon as possible and go sit back to my comfort zone.
But this was until I mustered the courage and gave myself an opportunity to master the Emcee skill for an event of my college, Alumni City Meet in Hyderabad. My mother motivated me by saying; standing against a crowd is fighting against all odds, which requires the strength of character, grit and determination. This forced me to get up and fight against the stage fear.
By not caring about the rejection, not overthinking about the audience’s reaction, relaxing and forgetting about my fear of public speaking, I practiced innumerable times in front of mirror days before going on stage. These things helped me in easing my body and made me less tense. I did fairly well & got applauded for my anchoring skills and making the event successful by the Director and committee chairperson. From then on, I never backed myself from taking any such responsibility.
Anyone can overcome their weaknesses if they decide to act upon them at the right time, in the right way. Just keep one thing in mind: Believe in yourself, take on your challenges, dig deep within yourself to conquer fears. Never let anyone bring you down. You got to keep going.
