IIM Shillong vs JBIMS Mumbai - Rankings
Comparing B-school rankings is not the ideal way to compare business schools, but it is still important to take them seriously as they serve as a starting point for your research. A good example of this is the FT Global MBA Rankings list released by the Financial Times every year, listing out the top-100 MBA institute in the country. If not for this list, one would have to rely on networks and other resources to compile one's own list, which would be tedious. Rankings simplify the process.

B-School | InsideIIM MBA Rankings 2020 | InsideIIM MBA Rankings 2019 |
IIM Shillong | 16th | 14th |
JBIMS Mumbai | 11th | 11th |
Both business schools feature amongst the top 15 management institutes of the country, with JBIMS getting a slight advantage over IIM Shillong. Though the gap may not be significant, it is interesting to note that JBIMS takes precedence over the ‘IIM’ tag for MBA aspirants, clearly indicating the strength of the much older ‘Bajaj’ brand.

IIM Shillong vs JBIMS Mumbai - Placements, Return on Investment
Placements are the most important criterion for B-school selection for MBA aspirants, as has been made evident in this report. But another criterion, considered slightly less important, is the return on investment offered. There are numerous institutes out there which offer management education but provide dismal placements, while of course charging mammoth fees. Therefore, it is important to understand how much dough you need to dish out, and how quickly you can recover your expenditure based on median and average placement figures.
IIM Shillong vs JBIMS Mumbai - Fees, Placements, Return on Investment | ||||
B-School | Fees | Highest CTC | Average CTC | Median CTC |
IIM Shillong | Rs. 14 lakhs | Rs. 40.00 lakhs p.a. | Rs.18.76 lakhs p.a. | Rs. 18.46 lakhs p.a. |
JBIMS Mumbai | Rs. 6 lakhs | Rs. 32.30 lakhs p.a. | Rs. 20.13 lakhs p.a. | Rs. 20.00 lakhs p.a. |
*IIM Shillong Placement Report is based on the year 2020
*JBIMS Mumbai Placement Report is based on the year 2019 (since the report for 2020 is not out yet)
In terms of Return on Investment, JBIMS emerges as the clear victor due to the incredibly low fee and excellent placements for the MMS batch of 2019. However, if compared it with the CTC increase in the year 2020, IIM Shillong does, in fact, also performs well.
But placement figures such as median and average CTC are not the only way to gauge Return on Investment. Other important factors include the recruiters on campus, and the packages received by the top 20-50% of the batch:
IIM Shillong - Final Placements Class of 2020
- Average CTC (Top 20%) - Rs. 29.17 lakhs p.a.
- Average CTC (Top 50%) - Rs. 23.28 lakhs p.a.
- A total of 60 recruiters participated in the Final Placements process at IIM Shillong.
- Bain & Company, ByteDance, Cognizant, Deloitte USI, FIITJEE, ICICI Bank, JP Morgan & Chase, and TATA Steel made the maximum number of offers this year.
- Top brands on campus included Accenture, Amazon, EY, JP Morgan Chase, Mahindra Group, TATA Group, Deloitte, and Aditya Birla Group among others.
- Consulting & Strategy was the most sought-after domain, with 29% of the total offers made to the participants, followed by Sales & Marketing (27%) and Finance (20%).
JBIMS Mumbai - Final Placements Class of 2019
- The average CTC for the Top-10% stood at Rs. 28.96 lakhs p.a., an increase of 14.1% compared to the previous year.
- The average CTC for the Top-30% stood at Rs. 26.40 lakhs p.a., an increase of 21.7% compared to the previous year.

- Top brands on campus included McKinsey & Company, the Boston Consulting Group, Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., ICICI Bank, Hindustan Unilever, Godrej Consumer Products, Mahindra Group, TATA Group, and Reliance Industries Limited amongst others.
- A whopping 41% of the batch opted for roles in the BFSI sector, a slight decline compared to 43% of the Class of 2018 that opted for roles in the sector.
- After BFSI, the Technology sector was the most sought-after, with 19% of the MMS batch of 2017-2019 opting for roles in this sector.
IIM Shillong vs JBIMS Mumbai - Student Exchange Opportunities
IIM Shillong offers a student exchange programme to its PGP students. "To further enrich the experience of the participants, the curriculum is supplemented by visits to foreign universities with a view to enabling understanding of business management from different cultural perspectives. This enables the participants to refine their outlook from diverse angles and also provide them with an opportunity to interact with students from different nationalities. Visits to industries in those countries are also a part of the Programme. This is an optional module, and is normally organized during the month of January so that they do not clash with the regular sessions of the Institute." However, the COVID-19 outbreak may put the student exchange experience at hold.
JBIMS does not have a student exchange programme yet.
IIM Shillong vs JBIMS Mumbai - Batch Size And Diversity
B-School | Batch Size |
IIM Shillong | 179 |
JBIMS Mumbai | 136 |
In terms of batch-size, both of these premier management institutes have less than 200 students in their MBA batches. If the larger batch size is perceived as more competition during placements, then both IIM Shillong and JBIMS students have a distinct advantage over other top management institutes in the same bracket (old IIMs, MDI, SPJIMR, IIFT, etc.).
When it comes to diversity - both academic and gender - IIM Shillong is far ahead of not just JBIMS, but most of the top management institutes across the country. At IIM Shillong, nearly half the PGP batch of 2017-2019 were female MBA candidates, while at JBIMS, that figure was as low as 12%.
In terms of academic diversity, once again, nearly half the PGP batch of 2018-2020 comprises non-engineers; the second-highest amongst all the elite B-schools of India (MICA topped this list). Again, JBIMS is far behind IIM Shillong in this aspect, with only 16% of the MMS Class of 2020 comprising non-engineers.

IIM Shillong vs JBIMS Mumbai - Location
When it comes to location, the location of these two fine institutes is in complete contrast, with the IIM located in the ‘Scotland of the East’, Shillong, in the remote region of North-Eastern India, and JBIMS located at the heart of the corporate world in one of the world’s fastest-growing cities and the financial capital of India.
There is no disputing the fact that JBIMS has a clear advantage in terms of location, with large corporate houses headquartered in Mumbai, and in fact, quite close to the actual campus. That said, given the importance recruiters give to the 'IIM' brand, IIM Shillong does see some of the top recruiters either visiting campus or conducting re-interviews to recruit top talent.
IIM Shillong vs JBIMS Mumbai - Conclusion
If only the aforementioned criteria are considered, JBIMS comes out on top in 5 of the 8 criteria (fees, placements, rankings, batch size, location). IIM Shillong, however, is a more diverse institute and offers a residential programme with hostel services, potentially reducing heavy expenditure that JBIMS students would have to incur to stay in an expensive city such as Mumbai. Additionally, IIM Shillong, unlike JBIMS, offers a student exchange programme to PGP students. Both campuses see top brands visiting their respective campuses each year for recruitment.
This is the comparison based on numbers. However, there are many other factors that are important while selecting a business school, such as campus life, clubs and committees, fests, corporate competition participation, etc. You can read more about these here:
