As an MBA Candidate, I believe everyday there is a new learning. You learn from everything around you, you notice, analyse and reinvent thoughts from the experiences. And the best part, goes without saying is, NETWORKING. It is the best platform to learn, unlearn and relearn. Sitting for the Summer Internship Processes, was an interesting experience for me. It basically taught me the enjoyment of failure. You get to understand and introspect about your own self. You understand your own competencies and weaknesses, and every time thrive to be better, better and finally the best. An engineer who aspire to be a sale pro learned the basic lesson of persistence through these constant endeavours. Some days are good, some days are not but you cannot depend on days. It’s a saying in sales which goes by “A sales person makes his own day”. I eventually learned it through some rejections and made by day on one fine occasion when Bata came to our campus.
According to me, the only mantra to get through any interview process is being confident and clear. By being clear, I mean there should be an absolute clarity of thought. You must know what you are aiming here and what are you really aspire for. Not only this, you have to play those minutes as if those are the last given minutes which will never return in your life. You have to make the interviewers know that what benefit will company have selecting you. It should be understood, that working in a company always calls for a two-way benefit. It should benefit them, as well as, you, and that is what you have to prove sitting in an interview. The willingness to learn, prove and achieve something is what lend people success in their life.
I interned at Bata India Limited. It sounds fancy, and trust me, it was. I was working with Biggest shoe retailer of the company, where I learned from a wide range of people. My project was on Retail operations focusing on increasing the sales of the men dress formal category (01) by 20% and Non-Footwear category by 40%. In my project, I carried out couple of things to achieve this expectation: -
- Morning Meetings with the Sales Promoter Executives and making them understand their Day target in number of pairs to be sold.
- Regrouping of stock across the 19 stores in the district to avoid cut size problem in the bestselling articles.
- Movement of worst selling articles across the stores of the district where selling of those articles is possible.
- Weekday and Weekend Customer Footfall Tracker.
- Creating more engaging Visual Merchandising at the stores.
Hence, my internship gave me a lot of valuable take-aways, which I call it as my surprisingly bag full of Learnings. My project was never limited to the above mentioned 5 points, I got to interview well-qualified and experienced people for certain strategic positions in the organization, I got to network with people holding huge positions of responsibilities in the company. And most interestingly, I got to understand the nitty-gritty of how a show goes on-air.
All this was not possible without the assistance of my mentor, Mr. Anil Malhotra, who is General Manager -Retail Family Concept, North. He is vibrant, full of dedication and result oriented personality. He helped me in widening my horizons, and help me think out of the box for the good of both. He was all ears to all my problems that I faced during implementing any of my activities, as well, a constant support to me.
