Bringing about a change in the world is challenging. More challenging is the mission to bring about a change in self. This is because it is easier to stay put, to maintain status quo, despite the world around us taking an ephemeral track. In my quest to maintain status quo over the years, I have found that each time I am faced with a challenge, the resolution starts with a simple step. The step is to adapt, learn and move on.

All along my career, I had worked with many industry veterans. These guys were highly experienced. Yet they would always bring in a question to the coffee table conversations which always kept us wondering. The questions were reflections of their learning which had never stopped over the years. Everytime I would be a party to such parley, I would feel the urge to learn something about what is breaking the status quo in the world around me.

Giving in to my love for numbers and the stories which build those numbers, I decided to pursue my higher education in the domain of analytics and finance. After my brief stint in an IT firm for over 2 years, when I took the not so pleasant decision to take a break and pursue higher education, the idea was less than welcome by my family and friends. Not that they questioned my abilities, but they wanted me to continue in an arena where my excellence was already established. The decision was difficult, and I wanted to convince everyone around that I would live up to the challenge.

Every single day I spent trying to convince people, I realized I was deviating from the true purpose of the decision that I had already made. That’s where I changed my approach. I focused more on learning something new every day, something which would align to my quest for understanding numbers. Today, as a B-School student in the area of finance and analytics, I believe my journey has just started. The imaginary status quo that I always sought was always comforting. But the reasons to abandon it, were always compelling. It was always the knowledge that lay beyond. The clairvoyance to overcome challenges always comes with the quest to learn something new out of it. There may be many ways to attain ambitions. However, the one right way that I have found in my life is to embrace change, whenever it comes and acquire sufficient knowledge to adapt to it.
