IIM Kozhikode Merit List Holder And BCG Intern On Life After You Join A B-School - Yashas Bhat
How do you bell the CAT? How do you master the infamous IIM interviews? Which IIM is right for me? There is a whole lot of data on what to do before getting in, however, what should be done ONCE you get in? How to ace the MBA degree and make the best out of it? Should you focus only on academics or do other things matter as well? To answer our questions, we have Yashas Bhat (IIM Kozhikode 2018-20 batch, Member of the IIMK Merit List, CA, CFA, FRM) sharing his story and how he does what he does.
1. Hi Yashas, thank you for agreeing to have a conversation with InsideIIM. Why don’t you tell us about yourself?
It’s my pleasure. I come from Navi Mumbai, spent most of my schooling and college days there. I decided to do commerce after school and ended up pursuing CA. Finance peaked my interest, so followed it up with CFA & FRM. Workwise, I looked to gain exposure in different areas, be it corporate finance, equity research, marketing and consulting. Currently, I am in 2nd year at IIM Kozhikode, trying to make the most of my last year of college life! I use my free time to pursue my hobbies, be it basketball or riding across Southern India. So yeah, that’s me.
2. How did you prioritize what work is to be done? You were clearly multi-tasking and excelling at all of them!
Two things really - nature & nurture! I grew up in an environment which encouraged the pursuit of interests. Right from my mom pursuing her love for yoga to my elder brother following his interests in music with his work, it was natural to look to pursue whatever excited us. But as the saying goes, “One for the kitchen, one for the soul.” I realised over time that having a bit of discipline and a lot of perseverance goes a long way.
Talking about my time at IIM Kozhikode, I actually thought about the things I wanted to work on in my time here. MBA was such an excellent opportunity to work on the things I wanted to achieve, and hence having a clear but flexible plan helped. Equally important is execution though, a little work every day goes a long way! To put it simply, if I want to enjoy my weekends off, I ensure all work is finished beforehand! It’s all about how you utilise your time really. Having said that, I am not too tough on myself if I fail to “complete my to-do list.” It is okay to have a few slow/bad days, but tomorrow is another opportunity to do something new.
3. What is your advice to the first-year students on acing the MBA?
“Storyboard” what you wish to achieve in your 1 / 2 years in an MBA college. While a lot of focus is given to getting that shortlist or acing your grades, there’s just so much more than an MBA college has to offer. I made a list of goals of what I wanted to achieve in my 2 years at IIM K, be it academics, internship, sports, hobbies or even working on my own self. Imagine these 2 years as a chance to experiment with whatever you want without real-world consequences. I never thought I’ll ever pick up biking as a hobby, but having tried it here, I realised that I love it! I reconnected with my love for basketball, even getting the honour of playing for the basketball team here at IIM K. I’ve met some pretty cool people here and got some breathing space to work on my own deficiencies. These things add so much more to one’s MBA experience!
4. What do you think helped you get into BCG? What were your learnings from the 2 months?
Well, a little bit of luck and a lot of hard work! My past experiences and credentials did help me get a shortlist, and then I was fortunate to find a group of crazy, smart and hard-working people to do cases within the one month of case prep! These guys made it fun and everyone was working collectively to get better, which was pretty awesome. Keeping my cool on the day of the interviews helped a lot as I kept a mindset of positivity and gratitude for getting a shot of sitting for the interview.
Working for those 2 months at BCG was a great experience as I got the chance to work with some of the smartest people I’ve met in an environment that is very fast-paced and dynamic. It helped me develop a more structured way of thinking and be a little more concise in my communication - two important life skills!
5. How has the MBA experience improved you? Would you recommend it to others?
MBA gives you a chance to work on whatever you wish to do, be it hobbies, acads, business ideas, make friends, network, anything! I have met some fantastic people and learnt so much from them. I have pretty much gone outside my comfort zone and pursued interests, sometimes even pushing my boundaries in terms of trying to balance acads and outside interests. I have grown a lot from these experiences, it has made me a lot wiser, a lot calmer and a hell lot happier. I would definitely recommend MBA to others if they can look at these 2 years from a much broader lens of academic, professional, extracurricular & personal growth.
6. Any tips for CAT aspirants on how to handle the pressure?
I used to draw comfort from the fact that the only thing I can really control is my efforts. I might as well double down on what I can control than worry about what the other ~2 lac aspirants would do to my chances. I was pretty myopic in my focus and gave my best! After all, things have a way of working out, one way or the other, right?
7. 8,000 km and an Instagram page (@thatvashiguy), how do you manage it? Tell us about some good memories you had
Ah well, when you love something, does it even look like work? A friend and I ended up going for the exquisite Biennale festival at Kochi on the 1st week of January, and there was no stopping after that! I was obsessed with travel - travelling every weekend in term 3. Biking served 2 purposes for me: it became my stress buster, a source of killing monotony while being a creative outlet to indulge myself in photography! It has been 10 months since I started travelling regularly, and it is crazy to think that I’ve covered 8,000 km in over 4 Southern states.
Not travelling in God’s Own Country is a sin really! I have had some amazing experiences during travel, seen wild life, met some really interesting people and got so much more clarity about life. I feel grateful that I got a chance to travel so much! If it was not for IIM K, I would never get an opportunity to indulge in both my passions – photography & travel! From riding alongside elephants, looking at nature at its greenest to meeting digital nomads, travel has fundamentally changed me! Not to say that I used to not carry some work to my trips, if you want to travel that frequently you have to balance that with travel. But hey, who’s to say you cannot have the best of both worlds?
Thanks a lot, Yashas for this lovely interaction. Hoping you ask me to join you on a trip next time :D
What Makes IIM Kozhikode Hatt-K
IIM Kozhikode, a proud member of the older IIMs is one of the most premier institutes of India. If you are a B-school aspirant, I am sure you know everything about its ranking and placement statistics. But a college is much more than that. Let me shed some light on things you MIGHT not be knowing about IIMK –
8 Things To Know About IIM Kozhikode
- A Campus To Die For
There is not one single business professional, who has come to campus and not mouthed these lines – “I had heard your campus was very beautiful, but this is much more breath-taking than I ever thought.” And this is followed by “Tell me one thing, how do you guys study here?” Our campus is extremely well designed. A mixture of architectural genius and natural beauty, it is one campus which makes you feel at home. If IIMs ever go out of business, I vote to convert this into a resort.
- Bhooklagi
How many successful start-ups do you know of? Let me re-phrase it a bit – How many PROFITABLE start-ups do you know? Well, Bhooklagi, a start-up owned by the PGP students of IIMK is one of a kind. It basically delivers food to IIMK students, through having tie-ups with various top eateries in Kozhikode like KFC, McDonalds, etc. The way to a student’s heart is through the stomach anyways :p - Gender diversity
IIM Kozhikode is a pioneer as far as promoting gender diversity is concerned. It was the first IIM to have a batch with girls MORE than boys, a feat very difficult to replicate for any college. To further bolster girl education, they have decided to reserve 60 seats specifically for them in the 2019-2021 batch. I think this is a welcome move and goes to show the commitment IIMK has towards education for all. - Business Museum
IIM Kozhikode is the proud owner of the first Business Museum of India. The museum, spanning over 23,000 square feet was inaugurated in 2013 by then HRD Minister Palam Raju. The museum intends to inspire budding entrepreneurs by providing the rich trade history of Kozhikode and about business in India. Many business houses, including Tata, Godrej, Reliance, Reserve Bank of India and Infosys have set up their pavilions inside the museum
- Going Digital
With demonetisation and push of the current government towards digitalization, India is slowly moving towards becoming a cashless economy. And IIMK is not far behind in this game. The kiosks which serve tea, snacks and refreshments have biometric devices which ensure cash is not needed at all in the campus. The admission office takes Rs. 25,000 as a deposit for 1 quarter and all your purchases get deducted from that. Obviously, you get the balance as a refund. However, no interest in the capital is given. - AF Matthews
How many of you have seen seniors attend YOUR lectures sitting on the floor just to experience the lecture again? This is the kind of following this professor enjoys. Widely regarded as the best professor of India, Professor AF Matthews is an experience everyone should have. From religion, God, sex, patriotism to social issues plaguing India, he has an opinion on them all. As a part of his course, he makes you watch around 10 offbeat movies, each with a different message in the end. Legend has it that each and every person who has watched his movies has cried at least once. Did I cry? Well, let's move on :p - Unique way of celebrating festivals
Onam, Ganesh Chaturthi, Navratri, International day – We celebrate them all. From wearing Mundus (Lungis) and Saris in Onam, to going all out traditional in Navratri, special care is taken about the attire by our merchandising committee. To encourage our international exchange students, we have a day where we invite them to take over our mess and prepare specialities of their countries for the entire campus. This is followed by dance performances by them. “Athithi devo bhava” truly!! And we get delicious food so, win-win right? :D
- The PR Cell
IIMK is one of the few colleges with an active social media presence. We have a special committee – The PR Cell, which handles all social media websites like Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. As far as Twitter is concerned, IIMK is one of the very few colleges in India which have a blue tick. Oh yeah, verified and shit! And guess what, the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi is one of our followers. Well, what are you waiting for? Follow us right away!
There are many more things I can talk about, but I guess I have made my point. Experience it to believe it :)

IIM Kozhikode - Experience It To Believe It
29th June, 2018 - How it all started
I had just woken up. It was already 10:30. My mom was shouting at me in the background, concerned what I was doing with my life. My father had already left for office. A boiling hot cup of coffee was right by my table. Typical day right?
So I take my phone out of charging and unlock it. My girlfriend had sent me Good morning messages before leaving for office. What a cutie. I see a mail from IIM Kozhikode and my heart starts beating faster. The last waitlist was going to be out and I knew I had a chance. I read the mail and leapt in joy. I had made it. I had managed to secure admission to one of India’s best B-schools, IIM Kozhikode. It was finally happening!!
My journey to the Kampus
In the plane, a middle-aged uncle was sitting next to me. We smiled at each other. Soon, we started a conversation and he asked me about the purpose of my visit. I said I had been selected for the IIMK flagship PGP program and was travelling there for the first time. He looked at me, impressed and said something which will motivate me for a long, long time. He said “ Oh, then I am talking to one of the brightest people of our country.”
Entering IIM Kozhikode
Sometimes a week is enough to establish a connection and sometimes a lifetime also falls short. I walked in the campus a week back and it feels like this is where I belong.
The campus is absolutely breath-taking. I had already seen the pictures, but it looked even better in real. Situated between 2 hillocks, IIMK is a nature lover’s paradise. It creates the perfect atmosphere to learn. From the Arjuna Path to a freaking amphitheatre (yes we have that too!!), we have it all! Not to forget the huge library and auditoriums. The cherry on top? Our every own Business Museum.
Living Conditions
As far as living conditions are concerned, they are really second to none. With AC rooms, and multiple hostel mess, utmost importance has been given to the student fraternity. There are also numerous snacks and tea stalls throughout the campus. They have been so particular, that ramps have been installed everywhere so that even physically challenged people face no issues. There are options of single rooms as well double rooms. However, the room is just used for sleeping!! Rest of the time, the entire campus is our home.
How to describe a typical day at IIMK? Well, I cannot. Because frankly, no day is typical.
From the first peaceful and exciting day to pulling an all-nighter in the first week itself, it has been awesome. The seniors have been extremely helpful, a legacy which IIMK is known for. The professors have made us feel at home and inspired us to work harder.
A usual day starts by 9 15. We have 4 lectures of 1 hour 15 minutes each. Taking breaks into account, we end up by 3 45-4. This is considering no extra lectures have been scheduled. Then comes the assignments, case studies, cultural events, some partying, Placecom tasks, phew!! Wait, it is 3 o clock already. WHATTT?
All my notions of “8 hours a day sleep is required to function properly” have been busted. I have not slept for more than 5 hours a single night and this is just the beginning.
(Chaar baj gaye hai lekin Kaam abhi baaki hai)
To sum up, I would just say -
4 hours of sleep.
3 cups of coffee.
2 tired eyes.
1 common goal - IIM Kozhikode.
Experience it to believe it :)

Interview Experiences & Prep Tips
Hard Way To IIM Kozhikode - 99.82 Percentiler's Story || Ft. Saurabh Kulkarni
When you are in an engineering college, it takes no time for you to understand whether you want to do engineering or not. Many may counter my views, but for me it was quick.
In my second year of engineering, I decided that an MBA is what I would pursue in my future. Although, I didn't start preparing then. I kept myself busy in extracurricular activities for the next two years and they never reminded me of CAT or MBA.
The spark for doing an MBA triggered in my third year. We had an all college aptitude exam and I stood first in the whole college. That made me think, if I am good at aptitude, I could even clear CAT! So I started contacting my seniors who had been in IIMs for guidance. Researched over the internet for the preparation and I found out that the majority of the people don't get it in the first chance. The fear of failure lured inside me and made me think for a backup.
Campus placements were about to begin and I decided to prepare for campus placements and after that study for CAT. Couldn't clear the aptitude round of the first four companies and the self-confidence shattered into pieces. CAT was a distant dream as getting placed was itself difficult. But finally, a company that had its initial round similar to CAT and two managerial interviews selected me.
August month had already started and I had only 3 months to prepare for one of the toughest exams. I started giving mocks where I scored only 75 percentile in the first one. But gradually in the month of November, I was able to achieve 98/99+ percentile.
January 5, results were out and I scored 99.82 percentile. I was very very happy. Happiness increased when IIM Calcutta called. I thought now I would surely land up in A, B or C. But the next five days were the worst. No calls from A, B, L, I. Kozhikode had not released yet, but that was a shocker for me. I had never checked for the criteria of any of the college. IIM Kozhikode called after a few days.
I had only two calls from the 6 older IIMs. Chances of getting in were very few, and my confidence level was very low. All the interviews were done. IIM Calcutta shortlist was out and I was rejected. IIM Kozhikode released their shortlist and I was waitlisted 322. This was another setback. The previous shortlist had moved just 150, and I was shortlisted 322. I lost all hopes and thought of joining the company and trying for CAT again. I accepted the offer from the company, started searching for accommodation. The waitlist was moving slowly but steadied at 96. But, IIM Kozhikode declared EWS quota and the list moved quickly to 63 and then to 36. It was 27 on 10th June, 2 on 13th June and converted on 17th June. We were called for registration in the college on 21st June.
I think it happened all for me and that's the best part of it. Currently studying in the first year, happily enjoying the MBA life!!!!
MBA Interview Experience Of Rank 2 Holder - IIM Kozhikode Selection Process 2019
In Mohit's words: Thursday, March 14, 2019: Exactly 20 days after I choking my way through IIM Ahmedabad’s interview, I knew this would be my last chance for a seat at one of the old IIMs. Troubled throughout the night, either due to excitement or kept awake by the demons of my past, this was a make-it or break-it situation. Soon enough, I got ready and took the hour-long journey from NOIDA to the prescribed venue – Hotel Radisson Blu in Dwarka. To pass the time and compose myself I flipped between several podcasts.
I arrived about a half-hour early and was guided towards the process by the kind receptionists at the hotel. Luckily, I was one of the first to arrive and was able to get my documents verified quickly. Soon enough the hall filled up quickly and I saw a few well-known faces (not teachers – but a few friends I’d picked up along the interview processes. For some reason all the schools – private or public called the same people in the same sequence given that they had passed the regulatory filters). We sat together spouting out nonsense but making everyone comfortable. As the clock struck 1 – we were assigned to various groups and made to sit for the “WAT” and “Resume Writing” sessions. The WAT topic if I remember correctly was “The need for Deurbanization in Modern India” – a simple enough topic (A simple but crucial tip to crack the process is to always align yourself with the values of the Organization and express these through your answers. The fact is that everyone there at that time is equally talented and the interviewers know that. What separates you is your attitude and how well you fit in the culture). Following the WAT, we were straight away given a separate sheet for the Resume Writing test – this turned out to be very different from what I had prepared for – only a couple of HR questions (luckily, these were something I’d written a ton of while filling in a number of forms and was able to answer them quite easily).
Finally, we were to be given our interview slots (1-10 allotted randomly) and sent for the interview process. Alas! I was awarded the all beloved number 10 – probably one of the 2 worst slots with the other being the 1st. You never want to begin the experience or keep on waiting as the time passed by excruciatingly slowly. But there had been some initial delay and every one documents hadn’t been processed. So, many members of our group didn’t go along with us. The first interview process probably went on for about 20-odd minutes and we spent the time outside either preparing to talking to each other to calm our nerves. In the meantime, realizing I was going to be waiting here for a couple of hours, I made myself comfortable. When the first person was done with the process, the interviewer came out and called out the second person name – who was still getting his document verified, the same happened with the third person in line and thus the professor decided to choose one of us randomly. And who else would he choose but the only person with his coat off. Caught off guard, I quickly wore my coat and followed him inside the room where I was greeted by another jolly-looking professor. As I sat down, I quickly realized that I had forgotten to keep my phone outside – a big NO-NO! in the process. Knowing the consequences, I quickly told the interviewers about the phone and that I was supposed to be last in the process and had completely forgotten about it when I was called in abruptly. They told me to put the phone outside and come back in quickly. Now, I do not know if my honesty in that situation earned me cherry points, but the moment I got up from the chair I was pretty much like – Shit! You had to open up your mouth Mohit and now you’ve drastically dropped your chances – which probably was the best thing that happened all day to me. Now that I had screwed-up, I wasn’t under pressure anymore – which let me loosen up and be myself.
Following this was probably the best interview I’ve ever had. The interview started with the few basic questions such as tell me about yourself, Why MBA? etc. and slowly moved on towards my family business where I had been working for the past year and a half. The questions ranged from asking specifics to my broad understanding of the business as well as a small situation-based case. There were also a few questions on politics (given the election time) to see how well I kept up with current affairs. (Another tip is to always at the very least learn the names and leaders of the ruling parties in the home state of the school as well as of the neighbouring states along with any disputes the state government might be involved in – I had similar questions in my interviews at MDI and IIFT). – Throughout the process I ensured that I was relaxed, kept a smile on my face and always kept eye-contact while answering to the point and not “gassing around” (gas = globally accepted shit. Each college has its acronym for the same and “gas” belongs to IIMK).
By the time it ended, I knew I had done good and would get in 100%. Little did I realize that I would be ranked 2nd amongst 485 students who secured admission in IIM Kozhikode.

This candidate has to be the boldest ever.
Group discussion topic: Something on the lines of NITI Aayog vs Planning Commission – Has there been any change or improvement?
So the GD started and people were discussing it calmly in the beginning. I was not sure how to get in. I kept quiet for 5 minutes. Everyone was going against NITI Aayog; basically, it was becoming anti-Modi.
There were some sweets on the table just a hand’s distance from me. I picked 1 up and started unwrapping it noisily. Suddenly, everybody started looking at me. I then said “ If I eat this sweet, I will keep the wrapper in my pocket and find a dustbin later on. Do you know why? It is because of the Swachh Bharat Mission. I then gave a monologue of 2 minutes mentioning scheme after scheme of the Modi government. (Talk about drama). I personally felt, the selection happened there itself.
Once the monologue was over, I popped the chocolate in my mouth; only to realize 2 minutes later, what a bad decision it was. I had to speak again but I could not do it with a candy in my mouth. So I reached into my mouth, slyly removed the chocolate and put it in my pocket. Half-eaten wet chocolate, in my pocket - that's right.
Once the GD was over, we all got up to leave. I saw 2 faculties sitting there and asked them earnestly “Can I take 2 more sweets? I am really hungry”. Their reaction – poker face!
Personal Interview
Panellist - Are you nervous?
Leki - Slightly. But people are much more nervous than me. Some guy just left his documents and exited. I guess I willl take up the responsibility and contact him.
Panellist – So you are a Mechanical engineeer with electrical work-ex?
Leki - Yes.
Panellist – Good. I am Mechanical. She is Electrical. This will be fun.
For the next few minutes, only questions related to my field and workex were asked.
Last 3 questions -
Panellist - So when you hear about Kerala what comes to your mind?
(We were buying fruits a week before – in Bangalore. My friend remarked – buy these bananas. These are the best. They come from Kerala.)
Leki - As soon as I heard the question, that incident came to my mind, and I said - “Bananas and coconuts.”
Panellist - Anything apart from food?
Candidate - No mam I am really hungry. Only bananas and coconuts.
*All laughing*
Panellist - What makes up the economy of Kerala?
Leki - Bananas and coconuts.
They were like – WHATTTTTTTTT
Panellist – Ok, who is the Chief Minister of Kerala?
Leki – I am sorry mam, forgive me, but there is someone whose name rhymes with Biryani.
*All laughing for a minute*
Panellist - You can go now.
Leki - *Got up; shook their hands* I guess I will now have to go back and try to contact the guy who left behind his file.
Panellist – Oh yes, please do that.

II) IIM Kozhikode interview - Brilliant answer by a CA –
Panellist - Do you know how to play Tic Tac Toe?
Candidate - Yes sir.
Panellist- What is the probability that I will win the match if we play?
Candidate - If you play against me, zero sir!
(Talk about confidence and owning the interview!)

III) IIM Kozhikode interview, Bangalore - Akshay Sriram
Panellist: *looking at the 10th and 12th scorecard* Arre why does every single student from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra have 90+ in academics?
Candidate: (smiling) I guess these state boards are lenient sir.
Panellist: So should I enrol my children into schools from these states?
Candidate: (smiling) Yes, if they want to get into the IIMs!

IV) IIM Lucknow interview
Panellist - What is the probability that this ceiling will fall on your head?
Candidate - *shocked* - There are many variables, like it depends on the material, etc.
Panellist – That’s fine, but give me an exact answer.
Candidate - I need to look at such events that have happened in the past few years and derive the probability from there.
Panellist – Did you not understand? I want an exact answer.
Candidate - *exasperated* - 1 in 10 million.

V) Snippets from an IIM Calcutta interview of a DTU engineer
Panellist 1 - Give me your file. Glances through it for a minute and nonchalantly throws it on the table. The first statement he makes in the interview - "Why are you even here? You have done nothing in your life."
Candidate - *Smilingly* These documents are not a reflection of who I am. (And a whole lot of GAS later on)
Panellist 1 – You have played so much cricket in your life. Let me ask you a cricket question. If there is a left arm around the wicket bowler, and the wind direction is from long on to first slip, how will you change your stance as a batsman?
Candidate - Gave the right answer.
Panellist 2 - *Asks a mechanical question*
Panellist 1 - Arey don't ask him about engineering. Bhai sahib has only played cricket in his life.
Some moments later...
Panellist 2 – Ok, let me ask you an easy question, who is the father of Indira Gandhi?
Panellist 1 – Jante ho na Indira Gandhi kaun hai?
*All laughing*
(Could not convert Calcutta; is a current batchmate of mine at IIM Kozhikode)

Panel 4 – Seq 3
Two panellists, both male. Let’s call them P1 (M), P2 (M).
Duration: 15-20 minutes
I entered the room and greeted them for a very good afternoon. They nodded and asked me to sit and asked for my file to see my certificates.
P1 (M): Hello Nilay, where do you exactly belong to?
Me: Yes sir, I was born in Bihar but was brought up in Delhi and so I completed my schooling in Delhi too.
P1 (M): You studied in SMVDU in J&K. How?
Me: (I told him about IIT-JEE MAINS, how my college was listed among the Central Government Funded Institutions and how I got a seat there to pursue undergraduate studies)
P1 (M): So SMVDU is in Katra, right?
Me: (I explained to him how my college is situated in a valley between Jammu and Katra. Therefore Reasi, not Katra)
P1 (M): Which places you have been there?
Me: I have never been to Kashmir valley but yes I have visited Katra, Patnitop and Nathatop.
P1 (M): Name any five districts of J&K?
Me: Kathua, Sambha, Reasi, Jammu and Udhampur.
P1 (M): How many total districts are there in J&K?
Me: Sorry sir, I don't know the exact number of districts there but if you want I can name a few more.
P1 (M): No, that's completely fine. Tell me who is the current Chief Minister of J&K?
Me: There is no CM there as of now. J&K is under President's Rule as PDP and BJP broke their alliance.
P1 (M): Who is the current Governor of J&K?
Me: Satya Pal Malik
P1 (M): What is President's Rule?
Me: (I explained it)
P1 (M): When does President's rule is imposed over a state?
Me: (I listed some conditions and cited the example of New Delhi when our current Cheif Minister Arvind Kejriwal resigns after 50 days of forming the government.)
P1 (M): So does President sit in the state? If yes, how would he control affairs if more than one state is under President's rule?
Me: No sir, He sits at the Center but controls the affairs concerning with the states under his rule and is supposed to pass any laws required to be imposed in these states.
P1 (M): Who is the Head of Executive of a state under President's rule?
Me: MISS 1: I said it's the President: (I later checked that it is always Governor.)
P1 (M): How is President of India elected?
Me: Miss 2: I said that the President is elected indirectly by the people of India. The Prime Minister and Rajya Sabha elect the President. (This is half of the election process)
P2 (M): So Nilay you are a fresher, right?
Me: Yes Sir!
P2 (M): Why didn't you take up a job?
Me: (I asked him to allow me to explain this and I started) Sir, I didn't sit in the placement process
P2 (M): Why?
Me: Sir, during the last year of my undergraduate studies I was working for an immigration firm.
P2 (M): Your college allowed that?
Me: Yes sir, as that work started with an internship which contributed to my Colloquium and later it was also my Major Project
P2 (M): Then?
Me: After completion of my undergraduate studies I was offered a position at Hyderabad but that would have required me to learn new skills. Also, I was highly motivated to do an MBA so, I decided to pursue my preparations for CAT.
P2 (M): So you want to do an easy job because you said you had to learn new things there?
Me: MISS 3: No sir, that was not the fact. I have been a Web Developer and the position required skills to develop an AI which is not my expertise. I would have to start back again from square zero and building an AI package takes years sometimes. Therefore, I decided to go with an MBA first as that was my preference first. (I think I could have given a more convincing answer)
P2 (M): What was your graduation major?
Me: Computer Science & Engineering
P2 (M): Write a few Sorting Algorithms.
Me: I started writing a few when he stopped me at #4.
P2 (M): Four is okay, Now write the time complexities of all four.
Me: I wrote for all of them.
P2 (M): Which one is best and why?
Me: I said the choice of best algorithm depends on the input size as space complexity also comes in play. I tried to draw a parallel between Quick Sort and Merge Sort.
P2 (M): Which time complexity does 'O' represent?
Me: Worst-case Sir!
P2 (M): What is the difference between 'O' and 'o'?
Me: MISS 4: I was not aware of the exact difference and its mathematical significance and so decided to give it a thought.
I said "O is strict worst-case complexity but o is not" and I admitted that I was not good with algorithms during my undergraduate studies.
P2 (M): That would be all Nilay, Best of Luck. (with a smile)
I thanked them and left quietly.
VERDICT: Converted
