Economics 101: A Topsy Turvy Ride through Facts and Figures

The very first class of our MBA journey started off with a bang with Manasi Phadke Ma’am introducing us to the mad, mad world of economics with wacky real life examples and quirky facts. Much like the book Freakonomics, Ma’am talked about how basic common sense drives the discipline with incentive designs determining outcomes of real life problems. We got a sneak peek into the exciting world of Game Theory and Strategic Decision Making with a detailed case analysis of Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana and how it’s stakeholders make decisions.

We started off with a lively discussion about demand forecasting and sampling techniques and somehow veered off into the crazy world of economics of corruption. There was a droll anecdote about how a politician bribed the villagers with pressure cookers but without the lid, which was to be made available only after he won. It was the perfect quirky example of complementary goods.

Overall it was a ravishing appetizer of the learning awaiting us in the next two years.

Which ABG company would you want to work for and why?

It was as an impressionable teenage girl that I got introduced to ABG via fashion. It was the summer of 2014 and the heat was unbearable. Cotton kurtis and leggings were my go-to ensemble for any occasion. It was at this point of time that I came across Liva leggings by Anita Dongre’s brand Global Desi. Free flowing and lustrous, it let my skin breathe and gave me a sense of freedom, while accentuating my body. I loved the product and was a bit curious about it. So, over my sluggish broadband connection, I pored over new concepts of VSF( Viscose Staple Fibre) and cent percent natural biodegradable fibres. Thus began my introduction to Birla Cellulose and Grasim.

Given an opportunity, I would like to work with Grasim as I identify with their commitment to cater to the needs of modern Indian women who desire fluid fashion which is environment-friendly. Nature never goes out of style and we the young generation strongly believe in eco-friendly consumption.
