My internship at IndiaMART

I remember that when IndiaMART came to my college, NMIMS Bangalore, for the marketing role, I decided to take majors as marketing just to get into that company. Not that I badly wanted to get into this company (Maybe somewhat I did! as it is the topmost company in the B2B sector) but because the location was near my hometown and the stipend offered was pretty decent. Indiamart is India’s largest online B2B marketplace, connecting buyers with suppliers and the company which recently got into IPO (Initial Public Offering). I had a skype interview with the company and was the only student who got selected for this company. The first day of my internship was on April 2nd,2019. The workplace is 25 kms away from my home. I could not decide whether to stay at my home and commute everyday or stay at some PG near the workplace. I decided to stay at home because I did not want to lose of opportunity of having  “Ghar ka khana” everyday.

The first two days was the training period which is known as “Shubhaarambh” at Indiamart. In this session, we are taught about different work domains of Indiamart and HR policies. We were allotted the projects on the third day. There were 11 other interns from IIM Ranchi, IIM Rohtak, IIM Udaipur and IIM Raipur.  My work was related to analytics, where I was supposed to generate automated reports through the use of Power BI and SQL. I did not have a single clue of what I was going to do.  My manager gave me a report on the same day to draw an analysis of the whole report and to watch tutorials of Power BI and R. I have a computer science background, so R was not much difficult and in a week I got a hang of working with Power BI. Now what is an automated reported? It is basically a report which is generated once and it gets refreshed at specific intervals like weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly. I was good with SQL so working in SQL was not much of a difficulty. Before the creation of automated reports, excel sheet is regulated on a weekly basis to extract data from the main database using using small queries and that data is analysed. Every individual query takes quite a lot of time to get the data from such a huge database. Therefore more employees are hired just to extract these data. In automated report, I merged all the queries into a single query based on the different conditions and then linked that query with power BI. Power BI can give a lot of visualization and is a very powerful tool to analyse the data. I was asked to create two automated report named ‘Search Logic and Business Relevancy’ and ‘Query Classification and MCAT’. I got to know that Power BI is an amazing tool in analytics. After the end of internship I thought that I will learn how to link Python and R to Power BI just to play around with this tool. And, during this internship I realized that how much I love coding and SQL, therefore I decided to take up analytics. Currently I am learning about visual tools like Tableau and R of advanced level and I’m loving it. I would like to thank my company mentor because he was very helpful to me throughout the internship. At the end, I would like to say that there might be possibilities that the JD sent by the company will be different from the work they actually give there, don't lose hope because it is just a learning experience. I found my way, I know you will too!
