‘Aditya Birla Group’ – Taking India to the world. *Goosebumps*. If there are a few brands in the country that can proudly claim this, surely in that list would feature ABG.
I used to look at fine clothing ads of Peter England while reading the newspaper and say to my dad, ‘When I grow up, I want to wear them’. Finally, my chance to wear them came during my undergrad days and my work life post that. I always loved the ‘Satin Touch’ range of Peter England for its shine and finesse. My father said me it was an Aditya Birla Group brand. That, to my memory, will always be the first instance I interacted and actually used an ABG brand(though I later realised I had used other brands of the group all along in my life ) .
I began understanding brands, and the power of business groups during the course of my MBA journey. I realised the contribution of groups like ABG to the country. While doing this research I was startled that the Mumbai- Worli link that I have always wanted to travel on was built using UltraTech cement. Not only that, the bike and the car that I ride had Birla Carbon in them. Who can live without a mobile phone these days? Certainly, not me, not the entire world. Idea was always known as the brand with those funky ads (‘What an idea Sir ji’ with Abhishek Bachchan) and I loved the powerful ideas conveyed in a simple manner through them. Even today, to become the world’s third largest telecom brand under the brand name ‘Vodaphone Idea’ is no little feat, connecting millions of lives like mine everyday. I was humbled on realising that Mr. Ghanshyam Das Birla was a close confidante of Mahatma Gandhi and set up critical industries that played a crucial role in the development of the country. Today, a US $44.3 billion corporation, the Aditya Birla Group is in the League of Fortune 500. I firmly believe that ABG and its brands have impacted many blessed lives such as mine and will continue to do so for many years to come.
