As the markets celebrate a some kind of a Pre-Diwali I decided to have a browse with what Drishtee Capital the very own student run investment fund of VGSoM IIT Kharagpur thinks about the challenges to be faced by the new government, the country in its new term after election and most importantly the most liked man of the hour –Narendra Modi !!.

This year I had multiple opportunities to speak to doctoral students and faculty at some of our leading institutions. IIM Rohtak had organized an internal Faculty Development Workshop; IIM Ahmedabad invited me to speak to their new cohort of doctoral students; and we had our own Faculty Development Programme (see picture below) as well as the Conference for Excellence in Research & Education (CERE) at IIM Indore.
In the middle of all the anti-Section 377 videos released, possibly the one that best summarizes Indian attitudes and perceptions towards same-sex love or attraction is ‘Coming Out Of The Kitchen Closet’, the recent sketch published by The Viral Fever on YouTube.

Well what inspired me to write this article was: not long ago (rather two days back) in a fine class of my venerable professor of Advanced learning and development, a topic came up for discussion and the above mentioned theme was a question she asked all of us. The source of the question was a HBR case study of Goldman Sachs leadership development academy in the class. As the pedagogy of some of our subjects consists of only HBR case studies followed with discussions of the articles given to be read along with the cases, we have been party to many such discussions and an entire elective subject was dedicated to power and leadership courtesy by another professor. We have been bombarded with quite a lot of literature on leadership. As usual for a typical MBA class where things are always being evaluated, it being a cut throat competitive world one's voice needs to get heard and thus started a long discussion.
There is a gradual yet perceptible change happening in our top management institutions as far as research and publication is concerned. More faculty are taking research seriously, and targeting top journals to publish their findings. This shift is the result of three drivers: Firstly, institutional policy changes now place more emphasis on research output as a requirement for promotion. Secondly, a new generation of better trained and research-oriented faculty has joined these institutions. And, thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, there is a growing aspiration to be seen as more than a teacher, i.e. to make a place for oneself among the larger academic peer community.
