When I was selected to undertake the student exchange program with EDHEC University in France, I said to myself “Mischief thou art afoot, take what course thou wilt.” Student exchange programs in general, and the ones that IIM students undertake in particular, are notorious for being labelled as Euro Trips! Upon selection, I harboured similar ambitions. However, the experiences I had spoke a different story altogether.
Four years back, I was watching a TED Talk with my friend as part of my classwork. That was the day when we wanted to know how one day we, too, can attend the TED conference. Well, we were surprised to know that TED grants licenses to individuals to organise similar events called as TEDx, where x = an independently organized TED Event. I was from Kerala, a state that didn’t have a TEDx event at that time. Hence, I decided to organise a TEDx of my own with a friend.
As a CAT aspirant coming from a tier 2 city, with limited access to educational resources. I had to travel 80 kms daily to seek education at the only coaching centre available. As is the hype around this entrance exam, all the students preparing for CAT tend to join one institute or the other to ace the exam which gives you access to most sought after b-schools of the country. But for me, the coaching institute was burning a hole in my pocket and was not worth the time I would invest in travelling every day. So, with that in mind, one day I decided to sit at home and prepare all by myself and I am glad I took the decision.
What if there were an option to enter and get a hang of the corporate life before your summer internship begins? Live Projects are an essential part of a PGPB student curriculum at MISB Bocconi. And if you are a fresher, it becomes even more important for you to get some experience before you join a company for an internship. They provide you with a variety of opportunities, both for networking and learning. And who knows? Maybe you'd be able to get an internship via your Live Project!
Vignana Jyothi Institute of Management (VJIM), Hyderabad recently hosted its 11th National Conference on “India Rising: Perspectives from South Asian Region” in the presence of renowned names from different industry sectors and academia. Held on 29th and 30th of Jan, the topical conference was high on relevance as it focused on the growing might of India, which has been bolstered by initiatives like Make in India and Digital India. As Indian brands take on global powerhouses, intra-regional trade in South Asia needs to reach its highest potential. These were some of the questions raised and answered through eye-opening discussions in the two-day conference.
In the contemporary society, leadership is no more the prerogative of a select few deciding the fate of a few others in exclusivity. Neither is it about building organizations with a handful of similarly dispositioned people. Today, as the world ushers in the hyper-digital age, the indispensability of engaging talent of diverse kinds is felt greater with each passing day. Close to the heels of this, comes the raging debate questioning the difference between equality and diversity and the role of leaders in it.
Ram Narasimhan is a University Distinguished Professor and the John H. McConnell Endowed Professor of Business. He holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, and is an alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad. He also holds an M.S. in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research and PhD in Management Science from the University of Minnesota. He is the recipient of the Distinguished OM Scholar Award from the Academy of Management, the Distinguished Global Researcher Award from the Pan Pacific Business Association, and the Dennis Grawoig Award from the Decision Sciences Institute for outstanding service to the profession.
