India’s best and the brightest certainly see the glamour attached to consulting. This is perhaps why it is by far one of the most aspired career domains in a b-school. The big bucks, exposure of working across various verticals and the push that it gives to one’s career also contribute to its attractiveness. Each year a select few from the top IIMs are shortlisted by consulting Goliaths. After a month of burning the midnight oil cracking cases, a select few get the offer they cannot refuse.
The sun shone down endlessly, without any respite, as if with a vengeance to absorb every drop of water that existed around the area. Despite the heat, I walked around with a determined look from one shop to another in the village, talking to retailers and taking a sip of water from my mineral water bottle to replenish the water I was losing quick and fast. My mind ran back to my CAT preparation days “Water in a tank is leaking from a hole. A motor running, pumps in water to the tank at a particular rate … and so on” and I gave myself a wry smile and walked to the next store to continue the never ending push for targets.
The following suggestions are a result of personal experiences after having sat on both sides of the interview table.
There is no doubt that the batch composition of the IIMs needed more diversity. At InsideIIM.com, we support the idea of increasing the number of women and non-engineers in a batch to provide an experience that introduces all kinds of perspectives in the 2 year MBA programme equivalent at the IIMs - the PGP. However, not at the cost of merit.
It may appear strange that a website called 'InsideIIM.com' has come up with such a headline. But, the concept of 'Brand IIM' requires serious examination.
