The Beauty Of IIM Shillong

So here I come to join IIM Shillong, the campus in clouds on June 23, 2017, along with my parents. The journey was so hectic, initially reaching Guwahati through the flight and then traveling to Shillong in a cab which is a delightful(head spinning) journey. As soon as I entered Shillong, some police officer stopped the car, and he is not allowing us to move ahead. My first impression of Shillong was worst. Later we reached campus, and the grilling of seniors started, we at IIM Shillong call that footsteps. We were given a huge number of assignments, tasks, and cases by seniors to make us prepare for our future ahead. During that time seniors asked us “Why IIM Shillong,” some of my batchmates answered like IIM Shillong seniors, alumni have won a lot of awards, they are in good positions in major MNC’s, some of my batchmates mentioned about placement reports and many other things. But after one year, many people change their opinion about Shillong and IIM Shillong. So what did change in this one year?

It is the middle of a class, everyone is deep into the case study being discussed, and you suddenly hear a little pup crying at the top of its voice. The cries keep on growing louder, the professor stops mid-sentence and looks outside the window. It is a small litter of pups playing with each other. One of them feels left out and decides that all the classes should be apprised of the unfair treatment it has faced. Refreshed from this thirty second break, we get back to our daily routine.

Footstep session and the task of writing the ten-pager was the onset of stress in life (IIM), much driven by the sudden change in the comfort zone of the participants. Abusing juniors in front of the whole batch and push them harder than their potential deprived participants of the minimal requirement of seven hours of sleep. The frustration of failure to complete the assignments with flash deadlines, the sense of fear to match the rigour of the IIM life and fear of missing out has only contributed to the growth of stress in life. What went missing to our surprise was the motivation and energy to live a life of an IIM and contribute in this competitive world.
