With just a little over three weeks to go for Friendship Day – 5th August, I cannot help but remember the tumultuous year which whizzed past, like the snap of a finger. I distinctly remember that evening of 23rd June 2017, when I first set foot in IIM Shillong. The grey clouds hovering above seemed to perhaps echo the multitude of emotions searing through me – anxiety, nervousness, a bit of self-conscious and amongst all these things, doubt started to creep in as to whether I was even cut out for the task of surviving the rigour of MBA, especially from one of the premier B-schools in the country, for I had always been with my family and never spent a week away from my loved ones (I was a day scholar during my graduation and have no formal work experience), let alone committing to operate independently for 2 years!
The first thing that meets the eye when one enters IIM Shillong is the lush green campus in the abode of clouds. You are bound to be mesmerized by the breath-taking views of the hills surrounding the campus. But this is just the tip of the iceberg and it is only when you become a part of the IIM Shillong family that you experience the true nature of what IIM Shillong has to offer.
The induction process got over and academic calendar was about to begin. Before that we, the whole batch had the experience of going to beautiful trek on the hills and forest of Meghalaya, which was organised by college administration.
It has been one year since I walked into the halls of IIM Shillong, but I will be lying if I said I have gotten used to the charm of this place. I continue to be astonished by the vivid colours the setting sun leaves behind, by the smell of wet grass, by the comforting drizzling rain and the rare sunny days. There is always so much to discover here, nature, the cafes, the courses, and most importantly yourself.
Surrounding yourself with the natural beauty makes you fall in love with the natural environment all over again and inculcates a feeling of belongingness for nature. We continuously live in a society that prides on its development in form of infrastructure, technology etc. but we tend to forget the importance that nature has on us and how it can motivate us towards growing in a more sustainable way.
It’s one of the most beautiful place on earth. Rightfully called as the “Scotland of the East”. I got an opportunity to witness it on 22nd June 2017, when I visited Guwahati for the first time. With a lot of excitement in heart coupled with the proud feeling of getting an opportunity to study in an IIM, I landed in Guwahati. The journey from Guwahati to Shillong is incredible and will give you a brief trailer of how beautiful Shillong really is.
Sitting in the class of marketing, suddenly everything goes hazy and I rub my eyes as I thought the sleepless nights are taking their toll. But after continuously rubbing, I realize its not my eyes but clouds that are making everything around me hazy. At first, I was amazed and surprised in equal measure, but now even after 1 year, when clouds fill our classrooms, the feeling of awe persists. At my internship, I encountered people from various B schools, and all the qualms they had with their colleagues were regarding the weather and how the excruciating summer plays a spoilsport, and here we are at IIM Shillong, sleeping in rooms without fans and with a blanket on.
