IIM Shillong - A Memorable Day

IIM Shillong - A Memorable Day

It’s 8:45 am in the morning and I woke up after having a sleep of just 4 hours. I have to enter the classroom at least 5 minutes before for 9 am class. I ran fast to the class and just managed it. It was my initial days, the most hectic and sleep-deprived days, at IIM Shillong. Life was moving extremely fast and I had to manage my performance among highly competitive batchmates. I did not even talk to my parents properly for more than one month since I came to Shillong.

IIM Shillong has been set up in the year 2007 with a vision of providing good quality management education and research in the North Eastern region of India. The decision of coming up with an Indian Institute of Management in the North East was unanimously taken by the Union Minister of Human Resource Development along with the Chief Ministers of the North Eastern States in the Review Meeting held at Shillong during June 2004.

IIM Shillong - Best Moments

The best moment at IIM Shillong was my internship experience with ITC was completely a trip! Wowser how everything began. An organization well known for its cigarettes and Sunfeast scones, (among a few different items) went to the grounds to enroll understudies at some point toward the finish of the primary term. Around then, I was almost certain I would not like to join this organization. I filled in the shape for its own particular purpose. Be that as it may, once I was chosen for the Group Discussion round, I got this sudden energy of nailing it. Also, that is the manner by which my battle for ITC summer internship began!

IIM Shillong - A Memorable Classroom Experience

I have attended many classes during my first year because I had no choice but to attend as all were mandatory subjects. In all, I have a very fond memory of one of the ‘Self and Leadership Communication’ class as this subject was one which required you to speak and express yourself in front of others. One of the class was on ‘Tell Your Story’ where we were supposed to speak about ourselves. This is not an easy task as you are always in a dilemma to speak the truth about yourself. While other classmates started speaking about themselves, I was still pondering should I speak what I want or should I not? It was also because others were telling about the funny incidents happened in their life or the situations they faced in the past, but my topic was different. I was going to speak about my life-the tough moments and why am I here at IIM Shillong. Then finally after two stories, I gathered all the courage and walked towards the dais to tell my story. I started telling my story that why I chose to be here and suddenly I broke up, and tears started shedding from eyes, and I could see my batchmates were also in tears hearing my story. It was at this moment that I felt so connected with my family(batchmates) away from home. They helped me to continue and gave that support to complete my story as I also realized that a good speaker is one which does not let emotion control his speech. After I finished my story, I could sense a feeling of togetherness in the classroom, and it gave courage to others to tell their true story or maybe to speak about what they want to speak. One of my batchmate who already told her story in the starting of session came back to speak about what she wanted to tell as in what she was going through and did not say in her first story. A few months later when she faced a tough situation in her life, I spoke to her about it, and that day she told me what the impact of my story on was her which gave the courage to go on the dais gain and speak about what she really wanted to say and tell others about herself. I never thought that my story could impact others in such a way that it would give courage to others to speak. We all have so many classes on different topics to learn about management in our classroom, but I believe these classroom lessons on ‘LIFE’ are the one which remains with you for the lifetime.

I would want to take up this opportunity and share a memorable classroom experience that has changed my views and beliefs about a far less spoken topic, Depression.

My experience in IIM Shillong till now was nothing less than a roller coaster ride. It had ups and downs. There were moments when I would feel butterflies in my stomach, the same way you do when you are at the highest point in the ride. Then there were some days when I would feel upside down. There were some points where I felt as if I am at the top of the world. If I were to note down all those experiences, it might turn out to be a small novel, but due to word limit constraints, I would share just one of those memorable experiences.

What do you want in your life? How you want it to be? These are very precarious questions. Ones which can rattle the minds of old and fill the young ones with both hope and despair. As you spend your two years in IIM Shillong, such questions and more would often invade the premises of your castle as you contemplate looking out over mighty rhododendron trees and chinar trees. The feeling of quiet solitude and appreciation that comes after trekking to a scenic place is found here aplenty and I must tell you that many of the poets and philosophers would kill to have such a weather and environment at their place.
