Having lived at home since I came to this world, moving out of home for the first time was difficult, I did get emotional when the time to leave finally came. The new chapter of life was going to start, a journey to IIFT, a dream I had held for quite some time, so finally, I left on 23rd June beginning my journey in a completely different world.
My first week at IIFT has been an invaluable experience that has inculcated important habits and woken me up to the rigors expected of a reputable b-school, which translates into expectations of the corporate and business world. The first and most interesting aspect of the IIFT campus is that it is located in the neighbourhood of Sanjay Van, a large urban forest spread over an area of 783 acres in South Delhi. The clean air, the lush greenery, and the rooftop view of sprawling woods from the hostel provide a sense of nearness to nature that few can expect to have in an urban metropolis. I was grateful for the view and the location of my hostel room, for the inherent satisfaction about the place I am going to call ‘home’ for the next two years was enough to leave a good first impression.
“We must be willing to get rid of the life we’ve planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us. The old skin has to be shed before the new one can come.”
Now that I have started typing, let me tell you about IIFT as and how I see it.
It has just been two weeks and it feels like I've been here for years. Such is the academic rigor and level of participation here at IIFT. My journey started with a week-long PDP (Personality Development Program) which every IIFTian could boast about. This program is designed to get us acquainted with the MBA life and more importantly bring about a sense of unity among the whole batch. The assignment deadlines and 15min breaks (including the travel time) to have meals, prepared us and made us believe that such targets are achievable. We shared meals with people we never interacted with and got to know each other through these activities. Time management was another aspect that I played a key role during my PDP.
The summer was pretty scorching when I arrived in Delhi on 20th June’18. The dust and pollution were invariably everywhere I stepped. In fact, for the first few times I travelled by cab near Paschim Vihar, Google told me how the air quality was significantly low and bad for breathing. To top it all, the Capital crime rate made me a lot more apprehensive about this place.
A week before joining IIFT, I knew it was going to be a rollercoaster ride. I should have read more about the twists and turns the rollercoaster had. Maybe I would have prepared myself more, but then again, was there anything to prepare me for this? My first impression of the place did not have the best of roots. I was the only occupant on the top 2 floors upon entering my room. It felt dark, slow, empty. I settled in quietly, putting everything in place, kind of got a sense of belonging in my room. Little did I know, it was the calm before the storm. A storm that took less than 24 hours to turn my life upside down.
