The Bajaj Experience
Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (‘JBIMS’) often referred to as ‘CEO factory of India’ says a tremendous lot about the kind of knowledge, rigor, discipline, and modesty the institute packs in a student to tackle the real-world business problems and excel at it while solving them. The flagship management program at JBIMS provides the students with a good perspective on the domain-specific concepts and their applications. The collaborative learning environment enhances the people skills and group dynamics which is critical while working in teams. The frequent chances to conduct presentations instils and fortifies the public speaking skills of the students.
JBIMS - A Legacy
On the evening of 23rd July 2017, that is when I joined JBIMS. And all I could see is a 5 storey red building with a lack luster infrastructure. But little did I know that I would soon be falling in love with this red building. A few days later I was discussing with my senior as to how would I manage to learn and groom myself in this environment with very limited resources and infrastructure. He simply smiled at me carefree stating the fact that this was not the first time he was listening to these remarks and I knew he is ready to change my perception.
JBIMS - A Million Dreams
The Dream of every 1 lakh students who appear for Common Entrance Test of Maharashtra state and also Non-Maharashtra students every year, an opportunity which will bring the businessman, a real hero, a real human out of them, these all things converge to form a red brick building which has the legacy of around more than 50 years and it is called as JBIMS. Many of the students prefer not to go to IIM’s and other prestigious B schools just to be in JBIMS. One might think of the reason behind it, but there is no one reason rather plenty of reasons which makes this B school what it is. It is a well known fact that JBIMS has a very strong alumni base, its alums in various industries and sectors have achieved what other B school alums only think of achieving. Apart from it the location where the campus resides is in the financial capital of India, many companies have their offices in Mumbai and operational units in Mumbai so it’s a great opportunity for the students to interact with these companies.
Learning The Bajaj Way
What I like about JB the most is its environment which keeps challenging you to come out of your comfort zone. We JBites humbly accept the absence of a lush green ivy campus and facilities like an amphitheatre, but at the same time, we proudly carry with us the legacy that JB has in creating masterminds of the corporate world.
The JBIMS Way
Established in the year 1965 by the University of Mumbai in collaboration with Stanford Global School of Business, Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies is one of the top B-School in the country. JBIMS is not just a name it’s a legacy of more than 50 years. Getting into Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies was a dream came true.
A "Young" Old Man Of JBIMS!
“Don’t enter the rat race. Because even if you win, you will just be a super rat and nothing more”, roared a 70 year ‘young’ man (as he calls himself). The entire class is spellbound and in a miraculous state of fearful respect for this man. It is one of the life principles that he teaches us in his own unique way. This man is Mr. Boman Moradian, a man of not only a great success but also great values and principles. He taught us operations management and has been teaching at our institute for years. Over these years Mr. Moradian has inspired a lot of people. Just the fact that he also taught people like Ms Chanda Kochhar and Mr. Uday Kotak, is enough to understand the time he has spent in teaching and inspiring. A great businessman and a world class consultant who chooses to keep teaching at this age to pass on the knowledge he has gathered over the years is indeed a great inspiration. Once, this man put a question in front of the class. “To improve your productivity, you have to measure the performance of your workers in terms of time taken to complete the task. But before taking the measurements, if you tell the workers they are going to be observed, it will make your measurements unreliable. What would you do in such a situation?” The suggestions started pouring in. Somebody said the measurements should be taken without their knowledge. The professor made him believe that he was slightly satisfied with his answer and asked him to elaborate. With the newly found confidence, the student went on to list how the measurements can be done without their knowledge. And then there was a long silence in the class. Everybody understood that this is the calm before the storm. And then the professor roared in his usual style, giving everyone a lesson of their life, and imbibing in our minds that how that would be unethical and how ethics is of prime importance.
Unheard Secret Of JBIMS
Joining JBIMS, one of India's most premier management institute was always a dream for me. Even prior to being admitted in the institute I had managed to visit the place a few times. One thing that always intrigued me is the bathtub right in the middle of the campus building. For days together I used to think as to why someone would place a bathtub right in the middle of a well-known reputed institute. The placement of the bathtub was such as if to show it in limelight and it is a part of the heritage of the building. I had a few friends who were then were studying at the institute. While interacting with them I used to quietly slip in this question regarding the bathtub just so as to know its exact purpose. More often than not they used to shrug off this question or usually divert to a completely different topic. That, in fact, heightened my curiosity even more and I kept thinking as if it is a part of the Bajaj tradition to keep the purpose of the bathtub a mystery to the outsiders.
