A Day In The Life Of A ‘Mandevian’

It is 3 AM in the morning. The incessant honking of vehicles that was prevalent a few hours ago has faded into a state of tranquility. The traffic jams that stretch through the length and breadth of every available road have disappeared. Calmness prevails at this time of the hour when the city is in a state of a dreamless slumber. Against this backdrop there is someone in sector 17 who is wide awake, working hard. No, I'm not talking about Bruce Wayne in his alter ego saving Gotham from decadence. I'm talking about someone who is preparing him/her self to be the next corporate warhorse or the entrepreneur who may solve some of society's burning problems. I'm talking about the 'Mandevian', a term used to refer to the student who has passed through the red brick walls of this eminent B-school: Management Development Institute - Gurgaon. At 3 AM, it is not uncommon to find the residential hostel packed with students discussing cases, preparing presentations, solving assignments, working towards dealing with challenges of tomorrow. Those who prefer to work in silence are to be found in the library that's equipped with state of the art infrastructure that boasts about having 40,000+ resources. But staying sharp at this time of the hour requires energy. So, where would you get food this late in the night? I'm glad you asked. Enter Sharma ji's canteen, a place where you can find food and beverage round the clock that helps you refresh and get back to work to give your best in whatever you were onto. Irrespective of whether it is day or night, the campus is always buzzing with activity. Whether is the zeal to compete in a B-school competition or to beat the opponent in a game of football, the Mandevian is always engrossed in endeavors that push him beyond his limits to make a better version of himself.

It was 11 in the night; all the 1st year students were sitting in the auditorium. On the other side of the podium were the members of the student council, ranting and raving about how useless all of us were. Up till now, we had spent only 15 days in MDI but we kind of had developed a habit of all of this and their taunts and sarcastic comments seemed like a usual routine. Listening to all of this, I was wondering as to how these guys would have managed their induction process, suddenly there was a loud shouting voice as if something bad has happened. The whole scenario was very strange not because of the shouting but because that loud voice was of that one member of the council, I have never heard uttering a word. This was followed by another yelling voice that said something like “this is the worst thing that has happened in MDI”, but again the person who said this was the General Secretary of the Student Council who was never seen shouting before and has always maintained a calm and composed demeanor.
