Memories At MDI
To write about a few thoughts about MDI after taking a break from finishing assignments, discussing group case studies, interacting with industry leaders and playing football, today, I realized that I have been at MDI for just over a month now. If I simply count the number of activities I have undertaken during these 30 days at MDI, it would seem like a year had passed! My first month at the MDI has been a great opportunity to holistically reflect on management practices with each passing day giving me a rich and memorable experience. More importantly, it’s also a journey of self-awareness - having the chance to reflect and to understand not just my own strengths and how I can best flex my leadership style in different groups, but also where my weaknesses are and how I can work with others who have complementary strengths.
Uniqueness Of MDI
The word ‘unique’ in general describes something which is one of its kind. However, I would like to put it more like something particularly remarkable about my fellow mates, faculty and our campus. The uniqueness of our campus lies in the unique mix inherent in its students and faculty and the strong bond that we share amongst us. Student here comes from diverse background, carrying and sharing their culture, experiences and learnings with them, which they exchange with each other for mutual benefit. Not so long back, when Professor Neera Jain was conducting a classroom session on Business Communication, she invited each of us to share a story of our own within a few minutes and also explain our learnings from them at the end. And as it began, we discovered a plethora of varied experiences and learnings. Several layers of emotions and outlooks unfolded before us, one by one, going deep making us realise how we are a small part of a big world; strong yet connected and powerful.
Learnings In The First Two Week - MDI
It was 13th June 2018, when I flew from Ahmedabad to Delhi, with lots of dreams and excitement, to my new journey. For whole year it was a tough situation to manage between busy work schedule and aspiration to excel in CAT. There was a kind of proud feeling that I did make through.
A New Chapter In Life - MDI
The journey has been only one month long but full of excitement. Each and every moment in MDI has been eventful until now. I came to the beautiful campus on 14th June full of nervous excitement. And from the next day onwards, there has been no relaxation, no more resting on your previous achievements or your brilliant score in CAT. There have been so many events which have been full of memories in the past one month. But, the moment which stands out is the sports competition KOK which has helped me challenge the barriers in my mind.
Midnight Rush - MDI
It was 6.24 in the morning. I stepped down at Nizamuddin Terminus, Delhi. The weather was awesome. I booked a cab to MDI Gurgaon. Driver was playing a Punjabi song and I am talked to him constantly throughout the 1-hour ride. And then appeared the MDI Gate. It reminded me of my B tech campus, the campus full of greenery.
Rushing Through The Brick And Green Campus - MDI
My journey in MDI has been full of rush, vigor and enthusiasm. But the most important aspect of this journey has been the inspiration that I get from my fellow batchmates. There have been umpteen number of instances where I pushed my limits just by getting inspired by my peers and batchmates. I would like to share one such incident here. There was a marathon which was organized by the social service club, SAMARITANS, in which everyone was asked to participate. The rules stated that a person needs to cover six rounds of the whole campus in order to complete the marathon. When I heard this, I got so terrified that I decided not to participate, as running in a marathon was the worst nightmare for me. But there was another rule, which stated that after completing every round, you got some points, which would eventually contribute to your class score. Hence, I somehow managed to convince myself to run just one round for the sake of my class. The marathon started and I somehow completed one round. But just as I was about to leave the track, I saw some boys bracing up to run the second round. When I looked into their eyes, I saw a flame, an intent to succeed, to make the class proud by giving their best. It was that flame which motivated me to push my limits a little further and run. I closed my eyes and ran for as long as I could, and when I opened them, I was standing at the finish line. I had completed six rounds of the marathon! After this incident, I realized that everything is possible when you have inspirational and motivated people around you.
Entertaining Campus - MDI
MDI campus is another world. It's like a living in a family with thousand members who are disciplined and focused yet knows how to have fun. One peculiar thing in my campus is marketing planning class in the first term. The class is very interactive where he shares his experiences and stories and makes it very engaging. He teaches us various concepts of marketing moulded into a story. But since the class is at 8:30 in the morning, most of us are in a drowsy state. But our professor has an interesting way to wake us up. So, if he finds anyone dozing off for more than 30 seconds in the class, he will ask that person to dance for a minute on some song in front of the entire class. Even a single second extra can make you dance. Seeing someone dancing with crazy moves refreshes our mind instantly. This also makes us feel more comfortable in his class and we feel, like our prof calls it, “entertained”! We also try to stay awake or not to get caught. But according to me, it's not very difficult to stay awake in his class because the way he teaches is amazing and we just need to stay attentive. This is one thing which I think differentiates MDI from any other B-school because he is the only teacher I know who responds to “found sleeping in the class” in such a way. This is one example of how efficiently the MDI community maintains the balance between sincerity and fun. The campus experience is quite enthralling and amusing at the same time. The activities and academics give us the lessons and the campus life gives us the experience!
