Two Weeks Into IIFT

Two Weeks Into IIFT

At the time of writing this article I am two weeks into my gruelling MBA program at Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, New Delhi. It has been a mixed bag as of now. The inaugural session was quite interesting and raised our hopes quite high, but as soon as the day ended, we were ushered back into the Auditorium by the Personality Development Program team comprised of the senior batch, whose sole objective was to bring us up to the standards expected by the esteemed faculty and the subsequent corporates who’d visit us here at IIFT. As it usually happens in situations like these, our zeal and enthusiasm were damped, as the seniors managed to find faults in every single one of us juniors. We were quite shaken by the sudden onset of pointed fingers, for very basic things such as not buttoning a collar or fumbling while introducing ourselves. These nuances, that most of us hadn’t bothered to work upon before joining the institute, were a constant source of worry and pain for most of our batch. We stayed up late, till almost early morning. doing team assignments, with tight deadlines of as low as 30 mins to prepare a presentation on a topic hardly anyone of us had ever heard of, let alone, read about. This did instil in us in a sense of batch unity, which was quite new to me personally, as I had never experienced such unity and camaraderie building on the first day itself. I speak from experience in this matter, I have juggled around six schools across India. On the second day and the following 4 days after that, we could only manage around an hour of sleep before our reporting time. Unfortunately, this took a toll on some of my batchmates, some physical, some mental. I, myself, found it hard to get accustomed to the 15 min meal breaks at the whims and fancies of the seniors, but that did teach every one of us to push, what we thought were our limits. The ones who had improved themselves, could be seen taking care of their roommates and anyone for that matter, they felt they could help. By the last day, every single one of us was up to the standards prescribed and expected of an MBA candidate here at IIFT.

Here Falls One, There Goes Another - IIFT

Here falls one, there goes another. Some other have dozed off by the time of breakfast. This is the hangover of the sleep-deprived nights we had. It has been 4 days in campus, or maybe 5, lost the count as days and nights are the same here. It feels ages since we left our homes and entered the lofty gates of our dream institute known as IIFT. So, it appears that it’s been enough days in the campus for us to know the place in and around it. Well! that’s a myth for a B-school student. We didn’t know much excepting few spots like an old hostel, mess and the auditorium, which was like a temple to us (freshers).

The Confused Child, A Transition Phase, And A Family For Two Years - IIFT

The Confused Child My dream of pursuing an MBA was etched deep into my thought process when one day my Manager was talking some figures and when I couldn’t understand he made a statement “You will not understand it’s high-level stuff”. These words have been deeply embedded in my memory and so I decided to pursue MBA from one of the most esteemed universities in the country. This is how my journey started at Indian Institute of Foreign Trade(IIFT), Delhi. The feeling when I was standing with my luggage at the gate of IIFT for the first time can’t be described in words. No clue of what life holds for me inside and with a clean slate mind, I opened the gates and entered into a whole new world.

IIFT Through The Scope

IIFT Through The Scope

IIFT in my view is a way to get into the corporate maze. A maze with a variety of species trying to find their own roots, trying to determine their destinations. Each managing to ascertain their reason to be at this place.

El Farsante – The Faker - IIFT

Dark into the night, Stars pulsating in the sky...I felt a chill through my bones yet a rush through my veins. She was standing there sipping a cup of coffee, playing with her hair threads, soft breeze rushing through them. I wished I could be the wind…. I wished. She whispered to me ‘Come, sit and hear me as you stay’.

To Two Years And Enriching Experiences - IIFT

I came to join IIFT, stepping foot in Kolkata for the first time. IIFT’s Kolkata campus is located away from the main city near the East Kolkata wetlands and Chowbaga village. It provides a mesmerizing view of green fields and simple rustic life. IIFT provides any MBA aspirant a diverse experience in terms of its unique classroom curriculum with special focus on international trade. Also, IIFT being among one of the premier B-schools has a very diverse peer group. The diverse student backgrounds remind me of a very funny and memorable incident in my very first class when we were asked to introduce ourselves. We have a classmate Sahil from Saffidon city, located in Haryana. Sahil while introducing himself told that he is from Saffidon, and most of the class (especially those from South) thought that he must be an NRI. They kept believing the same until a teacher of ours asked each one of us to introduce the person sitting next to us. So Kaushik (from Chennai) introduced Sahil and called him a former NRI. That moment was accompanied with laughter (from us who knew) and astonishment (from Kaushik and others) and it has become one incident our class remembers very fondly. In the class I was sitting next to Manukant (from Kerala), he said to me that your surname is very easy to remember as “Chiller” in Malayalam means “currency” and asked if I am Manushi Chhillar’s cousin?....Listening to the hilarious remarks I couldn’t stop myself from laughing and this made my first day at IIFT unforgettably fun filled and amusing. Another memorable experience that IIFT gave me within the first few days of joining was travelling on a “tuk-tuk”. A Tuk-Tuk is essentially a 3 wheeler automobile with no seats, just a flat wooden plank attached at the back. It plies from outside our college to the nearest spots where public transportation is available. Travelling on it with legs hanging in the air and peaceful rural landscape around is a unique experience especially for our generation. I am sure the coming 2 years will bring more enriching experiences…

The Diversity In Lakes - IIFT

The day I took my first step towards exploring new world & adventures at IIFT Kolkata was a memorable moment for me. It was the biggest day of my life, the anxiety, fear, nervousness and myriads of questions but no answers. The main & funny part of the first day is an introduction you wish to put your best foot forward but when your turn arrives you feel a sudden rush and your heartbeat increases & nervousness surrounds. The scenic view of campus which you viewed in pictures is now a reality and mesmerizing you with the greenery and beautiful lakes. Trust me someone from Gurugram would love to be here - a place with such calmness, fresh air, lakes and a beautiful masterpiece at the entry. The well-maintained gardens are an added value. The architectural design of the building Is appealing with water bodies. The well-equipped classrooms and Audi enable the students to study with help of technology.

IIFT - New Challenges

One of the reasons for me to join an MBA was to build the network and have 2 years of fun learning experiences. Though the activities involved in a b-school seemed challenging to me, I love challenging myself. Getting a chance to do things which we haven’t done before, brings the best of creativity from inside us.
