Gossip! Yes, this is true for all the classrooms whether it is LKG or a B- School. The first lecture got over and as soon as the teacher left, the students started talking. Oh, wait! In b-schools it is networking.
The uniqueness of my campus is the number of institutes on the campus. Currently, there are three institutes in the campus, they are:
People might generally feel that we are still relaxing – people are still missing their homes and classes have still not been scheduled. Usually, that should have been the case, right? But let me clear all doubts by saying that we are not. We are not leading the life we used to lead even a couple of weeks back. We already have assignments piling up, and so many co-curricular to care about. But trust me when I say this, it is not tiring at all. These late nights and early mornings are not taxing, all because of a simple reason – we seem to know our peers since ages and this place already feels like home.
When it comes to choosing an Institution where you plan to learn and upgrade yourself; a lot of thought and analysis goes into it. For me, it was even more strenuous as I come with three plus years of experience in IT and at this stage, it was choosing between switching jobs and staying in the same field and grow, or start completely fresh in a new domain. After a thorough SWOT analysis, I finally came to a decision to pursue my masters. But the task didn’t end there as I had this plethora of institutions to choose from.
Like any other CAT aspirant, I too dreamt of getting into an IIM, and here I am at IIM Shillong. So the journey was a bit long starting from preparing for CAT to getting shortlisted for the interview and converting the call, but when I look back and introspect, the whole journey was worthwhile. Before joining the institute I was both anxious and excited, anxious because it was a completely new place for me as I have always been in North- India and excited to meet new people. There were several factors that help me decide to join IIM Shillong.
Participants of PGP18 were privileged to take part in the sustainability trek. We got the opportunity to visit the sacred forest and to have a trek in a country side hilly area. We got the opportunity to have a sustainability trek in the midst of misty clouds and beautiful greenery. The sustainability trek is unique to IIM Shillong. Getting a feel of the nature and the advantages of preserving it was the first step in learning sustainability and business. We were taken to the sacred forest first. We got a nice view of the surroundings natural beauty from the buses in the way.
Marketing Management, not a class I was particularly looking forward too. In spite of being from commerce background or because of being from commerce background my interest level for the subject had reduced. Since it was Term 1 and I had already gone through the course outline, I did not come across any new topics to be covered. It consisted of general base building concepts about marketing and sales, the 4Ps, how to become consumer oriented, etcetera.
There are around 7 billion brains in the world and each brain forms a different story about a particular thing. The story is influenced by a lot of factors like the mindset, past experiences, current situation, creativity of the individual etc. Sometimes the perception is also influenced by the system of which an individual has been a part of and in the present context for me it’s the education system. All of us have been through almost the same kind of education system that promoted us to learn whatever was taught by the instructor and the system thus tried to instill a standardised system of thinking in our brains wherein all of us thought in the similar way in order to reach the same answer. Slowly and steadily the above mentioned thought process got engrained in our thoughts and we started perceiving things in a biased way and strived to somehow reach the answer that would fetch us good grades. I carried the same thought process to my B school and in the very first lecture that I attended the subconsciously imposed system of thinking was challenged. The subject was statistics and as soon as the class saw the problem students started solving it and got the “right” answer. But, the instructor straightaway declared the answer wrong though he said that it was mathematically right. A wave of utter confusion went across the room and the students started discussing among themselves as to what was the instructor trying to point towards.
