We come across countless number of people in our lives but there are handful of unique creatures that in their own way, with their idiosyncrasy leave a long lasting impression on us. And it is weird or may be lucky, that in my stay at IIM Sirmaur during the first year I have stumbled across few of such souls and each of them have taught something to me in their own unique way.
My journey to IIM Shillong was peculiar in its own way. It was in May when one fine day after going through my mails I was filled with ecstasy, unlike numerous other work days. I stood up from my desk and started pondering at the change of events. This was not just another event; it had the potential to change my years to come. While the hands of destiny were shaping my future, apprehensions started to creep in. I had a whole new world of possibilities lying in front of me to choose from. On one hand my mind insisted to continue at the coveted MNC I was working for on other my dream of getting admitted to premier B-schools abroad spooked me. If this was not enough the thought of my previous results crossed my mind. I realized that I had to forgo the amount I had already paid at one of the old IIM’s.
Indian Institute of Management Shillong, a very prestigious institute which enjoys the charms of the city Shillong, the Scotland of the East, is a perfect place for students aspiring to become the future managers and better individuals in all aspects of life. IIM Shillong is unique as it is situated in the north eastern part of the country which gives the opportunity to experience a totally different environment to be in. One most differentiating thing about IIM Shillong is that it has a very huge focus on sustainability, one of the most important thing to do which people knowingly ignore. The institute also hosts international conferences on sustainability, annually. It is an institute which has sustainability at its core, everything that happens in IIMS has a sustainability aspect to it. To grow awareness about sustainability, we conduct a complete one week course on sustainability where both theory and practical aspects are covered. The one day trek onto the hills of Meghalaya is a great chance for everyone to experience the beauty of nature and a realization about how important the nature is.
When you talk about the brand IIM, it’s typical to expect certain things -sleepless nights, tight schedules, deadlines, race against time, competitions, opportunities, meeting place of the best minds. Life at IIM Shillong has all of this to offer, but with a sweetener, incase you feel too bogged down with the rigor. And mind you, even the ones who think they have come well prepared for the ride will once for sure accede to pressure. Here, the immense, unbearable beauty of Shillong’s setting would come to one’s rescue.
I still clearly remember the 12th May 2017; it was my 23rd birthday and my last day in VIT University. It goes without saying that it is college where people spend the best years of their life and in my case also it was no different. But that was not just it. College changed me in so many ways that I could never have been half the individual I am today if I would not have been there.
As I walked through the gates of IIM Shillong for the first time, I had the overwhelming feeling of having walked into a picture postcard. The towering trees stood with arms wide open, welcoming me in and inviting me to stay. Warm sunlight sieved in through the leaves, caressing my face. I breathed in the fresh air, and knew this was a rare case of love at first sight.
IIM Shillong. The name itself inculcates a sense of grandeur. Joining an IIM was always a dream of mine. Getting into the campus in clouds has been a whole other sense of achievement. It all started with CAT like how it was for everyone else. But my journey has had its share of ups and downs, both during the preparation for the exam as well as the interview. From doubting if I would get a good score to converting IIM Shillong, it has been a rollercoaster from the start. Having heard a lot about IIM Shillong from a relative who also graduated from here, I had my heart set on this B-School.
Being the newest among the oldest and the oldest among the newest, IIM Shillong has created a niche for itself. The level of enthusiasm with which the students of IIM Shillong join the campus is unmatched. Many feel that the small batch size is a disadvantage but looking at it from an optimistic perspective, it facilitates more interaction and networking to such an extent that all the students know each other very well.
