A Large Family In A Small Box - IIM Raipur

A Large Family In A Small Box - IIM Raipur

It’s been 16 days since I have joined IIM Raipur and I feel there is one thing that distinguishes IIM Raipur from rest of the IIMs is its campus. No, I am not talking about its new campus in Naya Raipur (Well, that will also be unique in its own way). It is the temporary GEC campus in Sejbahar, Raipur. Main building encompasses the academic block as well as the HOSTEL. The classrooms are just a few steps away from the hostel rooms. This allows me the extra 20-30 min in a day which would not have been possible if the hostel had a separate building. The best place in the campus is our dorm rooms. You can have discussions, interaction with 6-7 students, from the different part of India, within a single large room. This helps in understanding different perspectives coming from people having different socio-economic and geographical background. This experience helps best when you are analysing a case study or finding a solution of a real-world problem. The hostel mess is near to Badminton court so even if you are watching a FIFA world cup match in the evening with your friends, you can always watch the live Badminton match as well and support your batch mates and seniors. The lobby area in the building is where you find students having late night discussions, be it a discussion on case studies, assignments, group activities or normal discussions. Also, there is a well-equipped gym inside the campus building which helps in keeping the body fit. Now when we look outside the campus building, we have cricket and football field, an open gym, basketball court and park. These all facilities are shared by 2 other institutes as well.

The most unique thing about my college campus is that it is the only campus in the country which houses both an IIM and an IIT. To add to that, we also have a GEC. So, in all there are 3 elite colleges in the same campus:

Our institute is one of the top prestigious B-schools in India equipped with 27 core faculty members, 9 Non-Profit Student organizational committee and 13 clubs which further divides into 4 academic clubs and 9 non-academic clubs. Our institution is accredited with AASCB (Associate to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) and one among the very few institutions who have been accredited with this. But what does actually makes our institute unique?

IIM Raipur was set up in Chattisgarh in the year 2010 by the Human Development and Research Ministry of India. It was inaugurated by Raman Singh, then Chief Minister in 2011. It has only been 8 years since the college has started, and yet the structure has evolved so much. There are already 9 student-driven committees and 13 student-driven clubs at IIM Raipur. Last year, another club was made for us to bring some colour in lives- Rang, the cultural club. There is even a sports club that has shown outstanding performance in different competitions. The pixel club helps us all with the brilliant photographs they take and other digital art that is really needed in these times. The quizzing club organizes quiz so that we increase our knowledge every day, and the Provakta club makes sure we speak with confidence and clarity. For people who love to help others, there is Kartavya, and for people who are interested in the environment, we have Prakriti. These were the non-academic clubs, we have clubs for people who love to learn even outside of classes, mantra, the marketing has won many competitions, Finatics, the finance club has its own perks. Hridhaan, Anasys and Operations Club help us with HR, analytics and Operations respectively. There is also a Consulting and Entrepreneurship Club for people who want to be the writers of their own life. Well, almost all the colleges will be having these clubs, but what unique here are the efforts that are put by the students to make even one event successful, the passion that the students have to make this place memorable and the confidence and ease with which they organize.

“Oh! Is it just this building?”, I thought as I got down the auto-rickshaw I hired to get to the campus. “Enjoy sir!” said the auto-walla trying to wash off his sarcastic smug as I looked at him to hand him his pay. Pondering over his reasons for that smug, I walked towards the on-campus bank to get through my loan formalities. Is it because the campus is so far off? Or is it because there is only one building that is called IIM Raipur? I found myself still thinking about the smug. Swallowing these thoughts into my sub-conscious I finished my loan formalities; I got through the document verification process and was officially an IIM Raipur PGP 2018-20 student.

What comes to your mind when someone names an institution? Its building? Its staff? No. It is the students and their collective work throughout the years that makes the perception of an institution. We often hear the news of a clash between management and students, regular strikes and a tiff between them. The reason behind this is the mismatch of ideology but what if students themselves decide what is good for them and the staff supports them? That’s exactly what we do at IIM Raipur. IIM Raipur is one of the few institutions where students take care of almost everything. We have different student committees, each one responsible for given field and staff supervises them. We have total 9 committees and 13 clubs.

As it happens in any of the premier B-Schools in the country, there are a diverse set of activities planned for the students. Many of the students owing to a gap of 1-2 months of leisure before they join a B-School, find it difficult to cope up with the hectic life of an MBA. Assignments, Projects, Quizzes etc. become the order of the day and it takes some time before we can adjust to them.

We had a class of Business communication by Prof. Archana Parashar. Professor had asked us to split in groups of 6 and we were asked to present a new product and to market it to the whole class. The first team presented about “hang-over”, a sachet of herbs promised to ease out the hangover effects of alcohol. They engaged the whole class by a way of an intriguing presentation. The next team presented “e-hanger”, which is supposed to be used for drying clothes during any climate. The product is a combination of normal hanger and a dryer coupled to perform the drying process. More than the product, it is the way they answered the queries that made them unique. They answered all the queries by allocating each query to different departments as if they had a real company. The next team went on to present on “Safety Glass for Automobiles”. They mainly focused on selling their products on the B2B model, which had taken the discussions to next level of business acumen. The next team presented about “Jack-Daniel”, an alcohol derivative made by Jack Fruit. The main objective is to get maximum profit for Jack Fruit farmers of North-Eastern India where they have a huge production of jackfruits but no potential market to sell their produce. Their presentation sparked a concern of promoting alcoholism if they have to stay profitable to which they explained that their motive is not to promote alcoholism but to convert the people who are already consuming alcohol to consume their product. The next team presented “Sage”, an integrated platform on digital, telephone and other media to provide help for those suffering from mental disorders, depressions, anxiety, etc.  The product was not profit motivated but was planned to work as an NGO getting funds from various organizations and government departments. The next team presented about “One Remote”, a single solution for controlling all home appliances. They had a perfect business model and were so excellent in their marketing skills that they even got a sizeable pre-bookings. The final team presented “Kalam Pen”, a pen with two refills and a laser pointer for a low cost. Their presentation was simply superb that I was confused for a moment whether I am in the class of Business communication or watching a Telemart show. The varied products and the way in which they were presented portrayed the diversity we have among the brilliant minds of PGP batch 18-20, IIM Raipur. The insights my batch mates bring to every class added additional value to all lectures, thus making the learning interesting and fun
