People come to this hallowed campus with huge dreams of what they want to be, with clear roadmaps of what they want to achieve by what age. Among the best in the country, the students are highly motivated and driven with a clear goal and purpose in mind. In a crucial juncture of their lives, people are so incredibly motivated that people often lose sight of everything else. In their quest to become someone, they lose who they were.
IIM Shillong sits in the abode of clouds in the state of Meghalaya. Being a premiere management school in the country, the institute attracts the best of talents across discipline in every batch. Each and every batch for the last 10 years have tried to take initiatives to make the learning experience for the students more enriching. Several clubs and committees in the institute strive for excellence and make the students apply their learnings in their in-house competitions.
IIM Shillong, the 7th IIM to be setup is unique in one of its kind. Shillong is possessed with natural beauty, which soothes our mind and our temporary yet one of the most beautiful campuses in India, provides us the appropriate environment for studying. There is something more than MBA, that we learn here at IIM Shillong. The moment we enter our campus, we are continuously taught by both the seniors and the teachers, and it is never limited to academics only. Sustainability is one of my favourite learnings, that I have grasped ever since I have come here. We, the fortunate and the educated ones, need to take the lead for the betterment of society and how to utilize the resources of nature without harming them. We all are specifically taught to switch off the lights, fans, geysers, etc. whenever we are not using them. Cleanliness is followed throughout the campus, and it has also spread throughout the city, and I feel that somehow this message needs to be delivered to bigger cities of India, which are already listed in top polluted cities of the world. IIM Shillong students are called as a part of the family, and all 360 of us (including both batches) know each other pretty well, and this is something which is hardly found in any other campus. All clubs and committees here work together and coherently for the development of the institute. Over the past 10 years, our seniors have achieved many prizes across the sectors. Sooner, we will be shifting to our permanent campus, and this will remove the current campus constraints, which exist in some cases. I got an opportunity in IIM Shillong to interact with diverse people from diverse background, and I have learnt many things from them, which are not limited to academics only. I can guarantee that our batch of 180 students will soon turn into a batch of 180 leaders, who will showcase their expertise and take the name of IIM Shillong to a greater height. It is the best time to invest in a developing institute with a bright future such as IIM Shillong.
IIM Shillong is a verb, it is constantly buzzing with activity. Everyone is always doing something. However, that little something that they do, is what makes them the amazing managers, that they wanted to be. I arrived at IIM Shillong on 23rd June 2017. I have always heard b-schools calling themselves as student driven and for me, it was just another term. The moment I entered IIM Shillong, I truly realised what a student driven Institute means. Right from our onboarding, hostel room allocations to guiding us on the rules and regulations of the college, the second-year student helped us throughout without expecting anything in return other than us dedicating our life to the betterment of IIM Shillong.
For the newly selected students, IIM Shillong or any other B-school for that matter, is like a promised land where individuals dream of giving a push to their careers. The beauty of MBA institutes is that people come in with different expectations- some looking forward to placements, some to learn about management for using it in their ventures and others who want to take a break from their jobs and at the same time learn something.
It had been almost two months and we students had thought that we understood most of the things about our campus. We had heard a lot of great things about the beauty of our campus and the region in general and one thing we were certain we had seen enough of was the proof of the tag “Campus in Clouds” for our college. You see, since the day we had arrived in the campus, we hadn’t seen the rain stop for even one day. The skies were always a dark grey and there was always the indication of rain in the next few hours even if there were moments of respite from the seemingly constant showers.
A year has passed by in an environment where ambitions are upheld in any possible way. Placements, B-plans, competitions are the center of most discussions. It began in the first trimester. We were told in the introduction session that “Reaching to top is not difficult, staying there is!”. We all began to work for a distant destination, which was away, disturbed yet confident of getting there. We became so busy trying to reach the destination, the crazy and lovable part of the journey was left behind. Trained and destined to be future of the corporate world. To be able to do so there was a course “Self-leadership and Communication”. The course was designed to improve the expressing efficiency of future leaders. In the course where taught the communication skills like public speaking, group discussions, writing etiquettes, etc.
