I belong to a place where many people are not aware of "IIM/IIT." I am the first one from my village to get into an IIM. It was my dream to get into an IIM and study with best minds of the country. After so many failures and successes, I managed to get admission in IIM Shillong. There were some preconceived notions about college and my to-be batchmates. I used to think everyone would be from a wealthy family and they must have seen only good things in their lives. I could be the only one who would be from a low-income family and see all the hardships.
One of the most memorable experiences of my time at IIM Shillong would be the Sustainability Trek we had at the beginning of the PGP Program. This was not just the highlight of the week-long foundation course that we had before our regular classes began but of the entirety of the time we have spent in the institute. Despite being exhausted from the recent exposure to the rigor of the PGP Program, everyone was eagerly looking forward to this trek and it showed during the entire duration of the trip. The journey started with a bus ride at around 5:30 AM. Some people chose to catch up on sleep while others were incessantly clicking pictures of the captivating beauty of the hills and the early morning fog while still others were up and about playing Antakshari on the bus.
The day I got admission in IIM Shillong, I was excited as well as thrilled not only because I would be starting with a new journey called MBA but also because I would get a chance to do it from a place lying among the clouds. North East has always been a place away from the other parts of the country, with its share of culture & beauty, unexposed from the hordes of tourist. When I reached the campus, the first thing I was mesmerized was the beauty & the naturality of the environment. All through my life, I have seen the environmental situation deteriorate as I moved from village to city & pollution increase. My campus lies within the city but even then, I don't hear any traffic sound & it's such a relief to rest among the greenery with an opportunity to listen to the bird's chirp in the morning to moments in the evening when the clouds play among the sky.
First of all, I would like to begin with the learning we achieve in the classrooms. The class like an organization exhibits learning in 3 stages – the individual stage, study group and the overall organization I,e the classroom stage. The class is divided into study groups and work. according to the socio-technical systems theory, the collective participation develops new patterns in the learning system. The participants exhibit single loop learning when they try solving problems superficially without delving deep into the root cause and they exhibit double loop learning when corrective measures are taken after root cause analysis. Further triple loop learning occurs when participants discover how their seniors have facilitated learning in the past and produce new learning methods based on that. Every class promises something new to learn and also provides efficient motivation to implement and relate the subject matters in real life. That being said, one of the most memorable experiences in a class that we all received was during the Storytelling session in the SLC course. SLC which stands for Self Leadership and Communication and its sessions really lived up to its name. It is during this session of storytelling – where the students could voluntarily be told stories of their individual experience and incidents in their life and its aftermath, left many of the participants and also the facilitator in various mixed emotions. As one by one the participants exchanged their stories and hidden secrets it was quite clear that the classroom was getting intensive. From guilt trips to proud moments, personal grievances to high achievements and chilling horror to intensive humour, all were shared within that short time span of 90 minutes. As expressed by the facilitator it was one of those moments in his academic career where he was moved to the core and so were we. The impact of the session lasted for days, where we could recognize and understand our peers on an intellectual level. Not only it brought in the class cohesiveness but also trust and confidence among us. The impact of this session has made an everlasting effect on the batch too, as it changed the perception of each other among us, helping us to judge and making decisions on moral values. This individual session has enabled us to share our thoughts and decisions more openly and showed a different and more diplomatic way to receive positive criticism and effectively work for one’s betterment.
Getting to IIM Shillong was a big moment for me. I was excited to be part of one of the best Business Schools in the country, learn from the best of the faculty, get to interact with peers and enjoy campus life. In my very first week, aimed at familiarising us with the sustainability, we went for a trek to the Mawphlang forest.
Just like all the other B-Schools, IIM Shillong is abuzz with new faces and new conversations. There are multiple conversations with seniors guiding juniors on how to make the best of the next two years and how MBA is whatever you choose it to be. The foundation of any business school is the enriching process of networking, and with the close-knit nature and culture of IIM Shillong, this objective is met wonderfully well.
What comes to your mind when you think about a class in B-School? The usual marketing, finance, operations and many more such boring subjects and much more boring the classes in these subjects.
Every day of the class is a memorable one when you are part of B School like IIM Shillong. Soothing background music of rain and mesmerizing view of nature keeps us lively all the time. Here the weather changes at the same pace as the curriculum. Out of all the best memories of classroom, If I were to point out one, it would be my first day in the class. It was the day, I realized that nothing is right or wrong, everyone has their own set of opinions and perspective, everyone is unique in some way or the other and at the end of the day we end up learning something or other from each of them. It’s the place that teach us peer learning. Discussion overflows with knowledge, experiences, learning shared by peers and professors. Case studies come with practical aspect of the theories that we have studied. Here, relationship between teacher and student is that of the facilitator and participant, who gives us direction and then we work on it. Also, we are made to work in the groups, where we learn together, celebrate success and sometimes failures too, explore diversities, fight for competitions and much more. But many a times we might find ourselves in a race and that would be the time self-management would play a significant role. And best part is our day just not end there, even at the end of the day when we are about to sleep, thoughts and curiosities on discussions went throughout the day keep floating in our mind just like clouds all around in the sky and even after being tired, some or the other interesting point will pop up in our head which we can add next day. Life at IIM demands for an open-minded person who is willing to learn. Inspire and keep inspiring, let innovation flow around and keep yourself engaged, your learning will be at the core and your memories unforgettable; with a pinch of salt and smile your life will take you beyond sky.
