How do you bell the CAT? How do you master the infamous IIM interviews? Which IIM is right for me? There is a whole lot of data on what to do before getting in, however, what should be done ONCE you get in? How to ace the MBA degree and make the best out of it? Should you focus only on academics or do other things matter as well? To answer our questions, we have Yashas Bhat (IIM Kozhikode 2018-20 batch, Member of the IIMK Merit List, CA, CFA, FRM) sharing his story and how he does what he does.
If your b-school were a film character, who would it be? SPJIMR students think their school and curriculum embody the qualities of Rancho or Phunsukh Wangdu from 3 Idiots. Remember the quirky Rancho who was passionate about solving problems, loved learning and went out of his way to help friends and foe (*cough*Virus*cough*) alike?! A b-school with a heart and the courage to stand apart. That’s what every b-school in India seems to strive for. That’s what proud SPJIMR students embody too! How? Find out in this video.
Before joining IIM Ranchi as we call it adoringly, I was super excited, very enthusiastic that life gave me an opportunity now it is time to perform but what I have heard was of students sleeping for merely 4 hours a day and then being a fresher will I be able to cope up with great minds of India whether will I be able to fit in as you know Life is a battlefield and I have made it to the most significant war zone of my life where smartness, sharpness was pretty obvious. My Bachelors in Accounting & Finance from the Mumbai University would be of no help. Coming to IIM Ranchi and the time I have spent here as of today has been an excellent experience. Meeting people from diverse backgrounds, have got different stories and strengths and have made amazing friends. Though almost everyone is elder to me, I never felt excluded as in IIM Ranchi you are valued for what you can contribute, your perspective to a particular situation, the way you would coordinate and play a role in the team and fulfill the job assigned to you with your charm, the type of human being you are with lots of experiences in different team activities, Management Challenges with time limits to perform a particular task and yeah over here timings are “sacrosanct”, The word sacrosanct has become my attitude as Life @ IIM teaches you a lot of things and transforms you into a different person altogether. The first term of your MBA life is the toughest exam which you would give and its not the course outline which makes the exam tougher but it is the pressure on a holistic level with all the corporate competitions, academic assignments, quizzes, case studies, the section wars, preparation for summers and then comes the live projects an opportunity which you can’t forego as being a fresher I will have to build my profile right! Then comes all the festivals which you cannot miss right after all celebrating a festival at IIM would be an experience of another level. Dandiya night, then Diwali was something I would cherish the experience for my life as with festivals comes happiness and with happiness, you make memories for a lifetime. Let's get to your preparation!! To get into a B school is a dream of every child who aspires to become a manager! Getting perfect 100 or 99.99 percentile seems impossible, but one can get a good percentile, which would be enough for you to make it into a top B school that you aspire. Diligently practice as CAT has three sections, each of which requires a different outlook. DI&LR is the trickiest, according to me, so you will have to devote your time by choosing your questions wisely. I focused on questions I was confident enough about solving. Verbal Ability is all about the way you can read, read and read though I did not give in a lot of time in it; I didn’t even neglect it either. In Quantitative Ability, I was taking my time to answer accurately, and it was the section I focused most on. Mock tests were helpful, unlike sectional tests, they gave me the real feeling of what the actual test is going to be. Work your way through sectional and mock tests. Don’t forget to practice previous year question papers. Instead try to focus most on them in the last month of preparation. Dedication plays a major role as firstly to sit for three hours to write a test is something which would be challenging for many as it was for me at least but by giving sectional tests slowly and steadily dwelt into it. The D day! Just be calm! You don’t have to attempt all the questions, but whatever you would try to maintain the accuracy as it is, the only thing that will decide the road between you and a B school you aspire.
B-schools are the perfect cauldron of people from all the spheres of life, yet: carved out to fit the extroverts of the world. A typical day at a B-school means 24 hours of social interaction in the name of peer learning, group assignments or committee meetings and while this situation might sound like a great learning experience, as an introvert with loner tendencies, I would prefer to be Buddha and find my learnings.
The first year of MBA life begins with a bang: understanding the culture of B-school via cultural events, networking with peers either in classes or committees & clubs, getting tuned into the regular lectures, and professors of the college. The first few months are amazing as you get adapted to the new life, reliving your college days again. But every bean has its black; thus, the stressful days begin when it is the time for getting placed for Summer Internships and the companies start coming on the campus in search of the most eligible candidate.
If I am asked what IIM Nagpur has given me, apart from the quality education and lifelong memories to cherish, I would feel elated to mention about the platform that IIMN has given me to stand up. From being an introvert to what I am today, IIM Nagpur has given me millions of learnings in the course of my Presidentship for Students’ Affairs Council, without having to lose my core identity.
MBA is more than just a degree, it’s an experience. And gender diversity is a part of that experience. Wouldn’t you feel weird if everyone in your campus talked, dressed, ate or even moved the same way? Gender diversity is not just a “feminist” thing. It is your right to talk, meet, greet, learn and even form relationships with people who live and experience life differently. And b-schools are wonderful places for that - to have different experiences, to understand and broaden your horizon for the diverse corporate world.
