Recently I met a student, who asked me what is it like to be at NMIMS? That’s when the idea of penning down this article struck me. If I were to sum it up in a line, it’s like living the corporate life even before you are actually living it. Confusing? Well, don’t worry, we’ll have that resolved by the end of this article.
In an era where the importance of possessing managerial expertise is perceived to be sky high, Business Schools have emerged to be the pilots flying raw talent up to those heights. B-School participants are caught up in a race for competence. Competitions, grades, projects and of course, placements aptly depict their lives! However, in the pace of the present, the glory of the past often loses its share of limelight. The heart of an institution lies in its Alumni and their reflections paint its eminence. Through this article, we bring to you the heritage of SPJIMR through the eyes of its Alumni.
The journey to this beautiful place which people often call as HelL started somewhere in July 2016, with an ambition to join one of the premier b-schools in India. The hectic software development at the office during daytime was often followed by 2-hour long quant/verbal/LR sessions during the night, which was again followed by a hectic office schedule the next morning. The schedule was pretty tight (thanks to a late start to CAT preparation), but it was all worth it (at least I thought so). 5 months of decent preparation and a vision to achieve something great did yield results. 21st April was the day when I actually achieved what I had dreamt of, converting IIM Lucknow (converted all other calls as well). That was just the beginning though, 2 months down the line and I was once again sitting in a classroom with probably one of the brightest people in India. With ultra-competitive people around, the pressure to perform was immense and there was literally no margin for error.

Every 20th student in India goes through several stages emotionally, physically and professionally. As our generation grapples with unprecedented levels of confusion, thanks to an increasingly open and connected world and avenues that were never available to our parents in their time, an MBA is perhaps an option that falls under the category of “safe”, “steady” and “stable”. An MBA does not seem to hold the promise of a thrill, nor the heady feeling of any of the arts. After all, what would former (more often than not, in India) engineers, accountants etc. know or understand anything about art?
Four years back, I was watching a TED Talk with my friend as part of my classwork. That was the day when we wanted to know how one day we, too, can attend the TED conference. Well, we were surprised to know that TED grants licenses to individuals to organise similar events called as TEDx, where x = an independently organized TED Event. I was from Kerala, a state that didn’t have a TEDx event at that time. Hence, I decided to organise a TEDx of my own with a friend.
