For even the little things that matter, thank you ABG! - SCMHRD

For even the little things that matter, thank you ABG! - SCMHRD

It was a cold, rainy March evening, when I had set foot inside the Louis Phillipe showroom at Sarjapur Roadin Bangalore. Just the day before, I had received an email from SCMHRD regarding my selection in their MBAprogram. I needed some high-quality formals. The brands that came to my mind were Allen Solly & LouisPhillipe. Little did I know, that these high-quality brands were actually “desi” in origin. From those formalsthat I purchased to the house that I’ve lived in, from the sweaters I wear to the bridge I crossed daily towork, almost all of them had some connection to ABG in some aspect.

Engineer Yesterday, Manager Tomorrow - Siddharth George SIBM, Pune

Ladies and Gentlemen, hold on to your seats because I’m here to take you on a wild ride, well not really but at least I got your attention now. So, the year was 2015, I had just finished giving my 12th boards and didn’t know what to do with my life (TBH I still don’t but that’s a story for some other me). So back to our story, I was a 17-year-old who just finished school and like every other Indian student I wanted to do engineering, surprisingly this was my choice, believe it or not. Not knowing which college to apply for I was going mad trying to find out about all the different options I had and I was trying to figure out which was the right college for me. So obviously like it happens in every Indian family, all my relatives and neighbors were suddenly experts in the education field and had a lot of advice. Not all of it was useful but it was fun to watch them argue among themselves, so back to this long-winded story of mine, I was confused and wasn’t really getting any useful information from anyone. I ended up doing the typical thing of just googling “Best Indian Engineering Colleges” and I was presented with a list of all the various IITs, NITs, etc. Among all those something near the very top of the list happened to catch my eye and that was Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani. BITS, Pilani really caught my eye because it’s one of the best colleges out there and there was a campus right next to my house so I wouldn’t have to leave. That was a really big plus point for me as I had never stayed by myself until I came to SIBM, Pune. Owing to the proximity of the college and the quality of the education provided, I decided that BITS, Pilani Dubai was going to be the place where I would end up spending some of the best years of my life. I do realize that BITS, Pilani isn’t a “product” of the Aditya Birla Group but every time I hear the name Aditya Birla Group or Mr. Kumar Mangalam Birla, the first thing that comes to mind in BITS, Pilani. I wanted to take this chance to express how grateful I am to the Birla Group for all that I’ve been blessed with thanks to them. Ok, enough with the sappiness for now we might get back to that later if we have time later on. So how have I made an impact? That’s something I keep thinking about and I think everyone asks themselves at some point in their life, “How have I made a difference?” I don’t have a definitive answer for this one yet but there have been a few moments in my life that have made me think maybe I have made a difference in someone’s life. A few of those moments that made me believe that were during my me as the President of the college’s SAE Chapter and the BAJA SAE team. It was a me of uncertainty and confusion for me, I was just getting done with my second year and I got thrust into this position by my then captain who was going to graduate next month. During the first team meeting as the captain, I was a nervous wreck but managed to stop myself from running out of the room screaming. I learnt a lot during my two years as the captain but the most important lesson I learnt was to always be patient and teach others what you know while learning what you don’t. I think I was able to teach the few 50-60 team members a little here and there while helping them out with their problems. I believe that the biggest impact you can have to society is if you can leave someone better off than when you first met them and that’s what I hope to keep doing. Well that’s a wrap, hope I wasn’t too boring and there were at least a few parts you enjoyed reading.

Recipe for a Win - An Underdog with a dash of Resilience! - Manya Bajpai, XIMB

The story of Aditya Birla group is an underdog’s story—from the humble beginnings of cotton trading in Rajasthan to the stature of being the biggest conglomerate of India. Being from a small town of Uttar Pradesh, Kanpur, I remember growing up shopping for clothes from the local retail shops. Kanpur did not have its first mall until the 2000s which is when the city its first branded fashion retail store - Pantaloons. When my cousins from New Delhi came down that summer to visit us, I remember gloating about the new fashion store in my seemingly lesser developed city. The conversations among the family adults on the dinner table used to be centred around the fact that if a nation-wide recognized fashion store saw potential in our city, the city must be on its way to further development—Pantaloons brought with it, a collective hope.
