How Did I Buckle Up After A 50.65%ile In VARC CAT 2020 And End Up Joining SPJIMR This Year?

Coming from the very small town of Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, I was inclined towards studies(10th-93.67%,12th- 91%, UG-8.43/10), especially mathematics. In 2017, I had sit for JEE Mains, Advanced, and WBJEE, through which I was admitted to the prestigious Jadavpur University, Mechanical Engineering Department. Fast forward to 2020, when I was in my fourth year, a subject called "Industrial Management" was taught. I developed a deep interest in that subject (don't ask about the rest subjects) and decided to do a project on that. The more I was involved in the major project about operations, the more I liked the subject. At this point, I decided to pursue an MBA in Operations and Supply Chain to gain the knowledge first and use it later in my corporate life.

As I look back upon the last 3 years, my life has been full of Ops (pun intended, I converted SPJIMR OPS) and downs. I was always an overachiever since school in academics as well as other areas (potential recruiters please take note). Come undergrad placements, I barely prepared for any interviews and my life had blessed me with luck having a value of a current Rs 2000 note (basically nada). I couldn't secure a half-decent placement in terms of the job role as well as the compensation. Adding to my already shattered hopes and dreams was the blow of working in a sleazy factory in the middle of nowhere, rather than the sought-after role of a Designer in a core engineering company.

From Scoring 81%ile On CAT 2021 To 98.56%ile On CAT 2022 - Ishita K., IIM Lucknow '25

I first dreamt of making it to an IIM back in 2018 when I was in 11th standard and started my IPMAT preparation. However, the efforts went in vain as even after clearing the overall cut-off by a good margin I could not make it through due to QA score being a little short but the dream never died! In 2021, I started with my CAT preparation while in the final year of my graduation but to my surprise, this wasn't enough to keep me going, I Ieft the preparation midway and ended up scoring a mere 81%ile in CAT 2021. I knew then that I'd need a bigger and better reason to give CAT my all and I found it in an unexpected place – Connaught Place, where I came across the famous "fire paan vala." His unique marketing technique of selling paan by displaying empty cigarette boxes blew my mind. At that moment, I realized that marketing was my path forward, and pursuing an MBA from one of the top 10 B-Schools would bring me closer to this dream.

A Classic GEM To IIM C Journey - Atharva Bais, CAT 2022 99.8%iler

Mine is the absolute classic GEM to IIM C journey. It started all the way back in October 2019 ! I was in the 3rd year of my B.Tech (CSE) at VIT Vellore. I always had an inclination towards management, I was the PR head of an on-campus NGO (Uddeshya), and also the Chairperson of a student tech club (VITLUG). After interning as a techie in Reliance Energy, Adani Electricity, and being a Samsung PRISM student, I knew I would like to be in the tech field, but not as a programmer. Programming was always fun, but when it comes to working, I did not like the fact that the decision making ability was very limited, I would only do what I was told to. So I joined a CAT prep institute which had a presence in the VIT campus. A few months into the journey, the pandemic struck.

2nd September 2022, I came back from my CFA Level-2 exam confident of passing the exam but I was not excited, rather I was anxious. This was because I still haven't started my preparation for CAT 2022 exam which was due in 3 months. This was my third attempt and previously I have scored 93.95 percentile in 2020 and 97.49 percentile in 2021.
