Till about two years back, I had no interest in Human Resource Management. In fact, I never even imagined myself in a managerial role! For as long as I can remember, I was interested in literature and social sciences. After completing my schooling, I had taken up English honours at Jadavpur University, where the eclectic curriculum makes it one of the best courses on English literature in this country. I had also been learning French since my school days and by the time I got to college, French had become my passion. All in all, you could say that I loved what I was doing! Midway through college, I was offered the position of a part-time French teacher at Alliance Française du Bengale. Although I had no previous inclinations towards teaching, I took up this opportunity hoping it would be a great learning experience. And you can bet your money it was! So when my graduation was done and dusted, the ‘safest’ career progression for me would be to take up teaching full-time. And that’s where the trouble began.
Before I pen down my thoughts about Life at TISS and all that it entails, from my perspective, let me take a step back and pen down my current state of being as I think it will in itself speak volumes about what I intend to.
“Why Research and Development to HR”- this question still rings my ear. I have been asked this over and over again in all the b-school interviews I have faced. Fortunately, I have found a good answer to this question after coming to Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai.
Focus, focus, focus! Aware of the devious minds at work, the wheels of logic already in motion, I request you to kindly direct your attention to the first two words of the title rather than the final one, for this intriguing tale is certain to keep you on the edge of your seat.
There is surely a life beyond IIMs. No institute in this world has the power to limit an individual’s capabilities or decide an individual’s fate. Every year, the 99% of the CAT takers who don’t make it to the country’s most sought after b-schools must know this, that it’s never the end of life. Life must have better things in store for them.
"Yeah! Now I'll be getting an MBA degree!" This was my sigh of excitement along with hundreds of other students studying in IIM when they heard that IIM Bill has been passed by the Lok Sabha. This definitely is a special moment for all of us, as finally, the Indian Institute of Managements (IIMs) have now joined the league of “Institute of National Importance” just as the IITs and AIIMS. This bill will now give the 20 prestigious B-schools more autonomy, and most importantly will allow them to grant degrees to students.
