How I Found My Calling At IIM Bangalore - Rituparna Malik's Story

Often, when we are starting out in our academic lives in IIMs, the one question asked in interviews are: What area do you want to specialize in? Some say Marketing, some say Finance. And so many times, at the end of the two years, it is so different a specialization from that earlier dream that you start out with. Something very similar happened with me. I came here, answering marketing questions in the interview, while having no idea of what actually marketing is. I did not have any previous experience. Coming to IIMB, I realized Finance is the more respectable thing to specialize in given the apparent brainwork. So in the summers, when I got shortlisted by several banks, I thought Finance was my calling.

Growing up in a lower middle class family, I always had a desire, instead of an aim. My desires were influenced by what I saw in the movies and society. I dreamed of being a rich man as shown in those Yashraj movies. Hidden beneath these desires was an innate aspiration to comprehend the workings of real world around me. So, I chose to graduate as an engineer but soon realized that knowing how a BMW worked was not as important as knowing why a BMW was such a prized possession. It seemed only logical to understand the bigger blocks after knowing all about the shapes and sizes of what comprised them. But collecting a gamut of information without an aim that combed through it was like searching for a needle in a haystack and that too with no information about that needle.

After two non-serious attempts, this was my 1st serious attempt. I had the basics in place. So I started practicing the problems directly. I was always fond of Quant but used to struggle with LR/DI. CAT had a change in its structure and now there were 3 sections instead of 2. With the change in structure I had to give more importance to LR/DI as it became a separate section and a minimum of 80 percentile in each section is required for IIM calls.

First things first! Studying in a B-School is rarely a dream that a person nurtures right from his/ her childhood days. Nobody plays core business level games during childhood. The closest to business game a child plays is called “Vyapari”. So a natural question arises, how come every year we see a surge of MBA aspirants who compete against each other like Spartans in a battlefield?

Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi is a dream that many MBA aspirants carry. It’s a dream that very few attain. But is it good enough to beat the top IIM? I guess it depends on who you ask. I know of quite a few people who chose the red building over the other esteemed b-schools. And when I asked them, if they made the right choice, they said they will never know, but it hasn’t hurt them yet. So in the year 2015, when I was faced the same dilemma, I chose the path that many wouldn’t. I picked FMS. My reasons were clear but I went through a rough one week trying to decide.

In today’s world nothing can be taken for granted.  The word ‘easy’ is getting omitted from our life day by day. One needs to give his/her 200% to crack an IIM.  I worked in Reliance Jio Infocomm for more than 3.5 years as a software developer (technical manager). One thing I realized that to climb up the corporate ladder you need to have an MBA degree sooner or later. What I think is to have a greater insight of your company and its project mission you need to be in a higher position and only an MBA degree can help you out. As soon as I realized all these facts I introduced myself in the battle field of CAT-war.
