I am writing this as a shout-out to all those MBA aspirants out there who have, for the better or worse, decided that their sole aim in life right now is to get into an IIM (or any b-school, really).
It was my first week in IIM Udaipur, and we were supposed to do our first group project. In a b-school, study groups are made by PGP office, and the groups are made with a specific purpose. The group contains a lot of diversity. There is at least one female in the group. Similarly, there are people with graduation in different domains in one study group. I was the only fresher engineer in the study group. The moment when other members started talking about balance sheets and Porter's five forces, I felt like an alien. I could not contribute much to the project. The next morning, we had alumni meet where three alumni came to motivate the incoming batch. The only question I wanted to ask what should a fresher do to survive in a b-school environment. I had so much inferiority complex of being a fresher at that time that I could not even ask my question out of the fear of being judged.
Why MBA? The most dreaded question in any MBA college interview. Different coaching institutes will offer you different advice. Some say be yourself and speak the truth, some will draft an answer for you and even how to present it. After hearing all these pieces of advice and giving a lot (LOT!!!) of interviews, I can give you a perspective, or at least a few pointers on how to approach this question.
Make a Mark & Leave a Mark - What it takes for an engineer to Standout
Often classified as one of the toughest exams an Indian Student can ever appear for, the Common Admissions Test (CAT), is, in fact, more a test of what you are made of rather than acumen. If you have the patience and determination, you can get a 99 percentile no matter what your 10th and 12th grades say.
IIM A, B, & C are not the institutes, about which everyone can dream of! This is what friends remarked when he expressed interest in joining IIMs. He researched further to realize that only 4 out of ~ 400 students of graduating batch '18 of IIMB had more than 58 months experience. Most of admits had academic scores at least 85% at all stages. Can a person with scores in 70s and PSU work-experience of 65 months aspire for traditional 2-year PGP at top IIMs? He had such apprehensions deep inside, but he just moved ahead with his plan.
If you think the biggest sadness is not getting a call from your dream college, then you are totally wrong. It is when you have calls from the college of the same Calibre and you must choose between them.
