I have been fortunate to be a part of FMS’ 60+ year legacy. It is one of the oldest B schools in the country and has produced many prominent personalities. But what really makes my campus unique is the efficiency with which we make the best use of our limited resources and stand tall at par with other best B schools. Being a graduate from IIT Madras, which is a 600acre campus, I was very sceptical on the quality of learning that is feasible in a campus which is as small as my hostel at IIT.

However, after spending close to a month at FMS, the saying “It’s not the car but the driver who wins the race” seems so apt. The amount of effort and efficiency put into organising the activities at FMS is beyond imagination. Even though it has been less than a month, the culture has percolated into everyone in our batch. Now we can collaborate and finish projects sitting at different PGs or flats at the oddest of hours. I believe this is what makes FMS unique – the quality to produce best results with minimalistic resources, that FMS has been able to imbibe into all its students.

A memorable classroom experience in my b-school

The most memorable experience in the very few days that I have spent at FMS is when our team had been announced the winner of a company analysis competition. It is not just a happy memory but a very important learning for me that the only way to be successful is to do a collaborative effort. Each and every person has their unique set of skills and as future managers, it is imperative that we identify this special skill and put it to use. It was serendipity that after failing many times, our team had figured out what we had been doing wrong. We focussed on leveraging everyone’s skills and collaborated in a constructive way and hence won the competition.

Introducing – some of my crazy batchmates

Saswat Gupta

Saswat has a very positive outlook on his life. He is an IIT Delhi Mechanical Engineering graduate and had spent 2 years of his life after graduation to crack IAS. Unfortunately, he hasn’t been able to clear the exam, yet he never shows any signs of negativity or regret. He motivates others to look at the positive side of life and accept failures to be stepping stones of success. He is very hard working and at the same time very jovial and friendly with all the students in the class.

Shanky Garg

Shanky is as different as his name is and is the pinnacle of talent. He has the skill to identify traits of a person and can do a 90% accurate imitation of the person with just a few interactions. His acting skills have brought him recognition, that he rightly deserves, throughout the campus.

Maruti Ram

Even though he is an engineer from IIT BHU, his interest in finance has made him pursue CFA. He has successfully cleared 2 levels of CFA and is very adept in finance. He always helps other students in understanding finance. But he always manages to attract trouble by making trivial mistakes. His witty and sometimes silly statements lighten up the mood of the class.

Sayali Dhoke

Sayali is the epitome of hard-working nature. Even though she isn’t from a premier institute like many others who are from IITs and NITs, she puts in the extra effort to make sure that she is as good as the others. She is a motivation and a constant reminder for the rest of us to keep working hard and not become complacent.

ABG company that I want to work for

I would like to work for Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited, the branded apparel arm of ABG. It constitutes of the best Indian formal apparel brands like Louis Philippe, Van Heusen, Allen Solly and Peter England. This arm of ABG has managed to acquire the largest share of formal apparel in India. It also has pantaloons to cater to the middle-class segment of India. I would like to work in their marketing department. I have always been interested in the fashion industry and I make sure I follow the global fashion trends in all segments like shirts, t-shirts, belts, shoes, spectacles etc. My up to date knowledge of consumer sentiment and interest will make me a good fit in the marketing team. The high market reach that AB Fashion has in India will make sure that I have an exponential learning curve.
