“I've been where you are, and once I stopped comparing myself to others, I realized just how fortunate I am to be here. You'll come to that realization too.”

That’s what my senior told me when I was feeling down and contemplating taking another year off. Now, as I write this with a smile, I can honestly say that I’ve not only accepted my path but also figured out how to make the most of it. Here’s what I’ve learned from my seniors and what I genuinely believe now:

1. Acceptance is the first step

Don’t get caught up in what might have been. Instead, take a moment to appreciate that you’re among the select few who got done with the CAT and secured a spot in an MBA program. Remember, there are countless others who didn’t even make it this far.

2. Exposure may be limited, but plenty of opportunities

Tier-2 colleges might not give you the same level of corporate exposure or a vast alumni network as the IIMs, they still provide a solid launching pad. It’s up to you to carve out your own opportunities: get involved in committees, build your network, attend events, and push yourself beyond your comfort zone.

3. Your peer group will define you, so choose wisely.

One of the most overlooked parts of your MBA journey is the circle of friends you build. Surround yourself with individuals who inspire, challenge, and uplift you. Seek out those who are genuinely eager to learn and grow. You’ll gain just as much from chai breaks, group projects, and late night chats as you will from your lectures. Keep in mind, the people you surround yourself with will not only influence your MBA experience but also shape your mindset.

4. Your resume is your face.

It is more than just a piece of paper, it’s your personal brand. Start crafting it from Day 1. Think of it like a startup, you’re the product, and every project, internship, competition, or certification adds to its value. Take on leadership roles in clubs, and dive into case competitions, they’ll sharpen your critical thinking, enhance teamwork skills, and help you stand out. Do internships, live projects, and even volunteer opportunities that enrich your profile. Consider online courses that align with your passions or help you fill any skill gaps.

5. Mental Health matters more than you think
MBA is intense. With tight deadlines, sleepless nights, and constant pressure, its too easy to get lost in the hustle and forget that you’re a person first and a student second.
Don’t wait until you’re completely burned out to start taking care of yourself. Take out some time, even if it’s just 10 minutes a day, to hit pause. Write down your thoughts, take a stroll, meditate, spend time with friends and family, or reach out for help if things start to feel too heavy, there’s absolutely no shame in that.
Because the real flex in an MBA isn’t just surviving it, it’s thriving without losing yourself in the process.

Being at a Tier-2 B-school doesn’t mean you’re on a Tier-2 career path. It’s just the starting line, and you’re the author of your own future. So hold your head up high, my friend and lets walk into our B-schools not with any regrets, but with intention, thankfulness, and determination.
