When aspirants think about cracking the Quantitative Aptitude (QA) section of CAT, the overwhelming diversity of topics—Algebra, Geometry, Number Systems, Arithmetic—can seem daunting. But what if there was a smarter way to prepare that doesn’t demand mastery of all topics?  That's Arithmetic in CAT: the high-ROI segment of CAT QA.

Why Focus on Arithmetic?

Over the last few years, arithmetic has consistently formed the backbone of the Quant section, contributing around 40% of the total questions. In a 22-question QA section (as seen in CAT 2023 and 2024), that’s approximately 8 to 9 questions directly from Arithmetic.

Given the trend and its conceptual simplicity compared to Algebra or Geometry, mastering Arithmetic can be your golden ticket to a high percentile. It's a data-backed strategy.

Let’s look at the actual numbers: According to CAT 2023 score vs percentile data, a score of 20 (i.e., getting ~7 questions right) was enough to hit the 95 percentile. In CAT 2024, a score of 22 got you there.

Now here’s the key: if you’re well-prepared in Arithmetic and attempt only those 8–9 questions with high accuracy, you can comfortably touch the 95th percentile without even venturing deep into complex algebra or geometry questions.

CAT Arithmetic Chapters – Order of Priority

If you want to play smart and not just work hard, focus on the following arithmetic topics in order:

  1. Percentages – The foundation for everything, especially profit-loss, interest, and data interpretation.
  2. Ratio and Proportion – Frequently tested, often in combination with other chapters.
  3. Mixtures and Allegations – Easy to master and can be solved quickly.
  4. Time, Speed, and Distance – Always a couple of questions from here.
  5. Time and Work – Logical and formula-based.
Simple and Compound Interest – Basic formulas and percentage knowledge work well here.

Master these five and you’re already looking at 90% of arithmetic questions covered.

Conclusion:

The data from CAT 2023 and CAT 2024 proves that just 8 accurate attempts can place you in the top 5% of test takers. So, instead of chasing everything under the sun, double down on arithmetic and turn your QA weakness into a strategic strength.

All the very best!
