Life in a B-School opens up its ways to a lot number of unique experiences. It is way different from any undergraduate experience and leaves a lasting impact on all our lives. An MBA student is never short of stories to share because these two years are nothing but a long journey of twists and turns where there’s a tale hidden at every curve.
Rural Immersion Programme, is one such small part of this roller coaster ride which is unique to IIM Indore. We were sent to a village for a week to assess the quality of sanitation facilities in the villages. Not only were we expected to survey the villagers, but we also had to stay with them for the entire week. We were a group of 4 students visiting one village, and the Village Sarpanch had made arrangements for our stay at his house itself. We spent the week living their schedules, having breakfast-cum-lunch at around 11:30 am, then working throughout the day completing our study and ending the day with dinner at 7 pm. Every house we went to, we were offered tea and warm greetings. The villagers were welcoming and willing to share their problems with us and help in every way possible to make our stay comfortable. We had a whole variety of unique experiences there. From waking up early morning every day, to jamming with two 70-year old Dadajis at midnight, from driving a tractor ourselves, to taking lift from a tempo to reach a nearby dhaba, from playing cricket and Kho-Kho with school children, to addressing the entire village and motivating them to work towards development, every activity added up to make a wholesome experience.
Their enthusiasm to work for their village and the unity with which they had been overcoming all their problems was something that not only surprised us but probably also inspired us. We were given a farewell by asking us to plant a sapling each, which will grow up to be a tree and remind us of the small impact that we created. Every sapling that we planted had a connotation of its own. Such beliefs in little thing of life are something truly awe-inspiring.
Finally, despite all struggles and challenges of living in a village, a week there will always form a part of one of my most cherished memories, tales of which I shall never get tired of sharing.
