The classroom experience at IIM Indore has been quite different from the boring textbook based classes in my engineering days. IIM Indore like most other premier B-Schools in the world follows a case based approach which makes the classroom experience much more effective and enjoyable as well.
The other major change that I have felt at IIM I is the level the instructors are willing to go to, to make sure that the learning objectives are delivered. We had one such course on “ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOUR” in the Term II of PGP – 1. As we all know that organizational behaviour is one of the subjects which teaches us the different difficult situations with people in the organization and how to overcome them. Although there were brilliant cases in the course outline, a practical experience in such cases teaches us much more. We were lucky enough to have instructors who were willing to go the extra mile make it possible.
In one such session there was a case which dealt with a toy making company. The problem that the company was facing was that there were incidents reported that children had unknowingly tried to swallow a small piece of a particular toy and chocked on it resulting in unfortunate deaths. Our instructor chose students from out class to don the hat of senior management and have them discuss how to handle the situation from here. There were heated discussions happening in the group about being ethical and taking up the blame for the incident while some of the others were of the view that it would completely finish the reputation of the company. Suddenly, the classroom door banged open and in came unknown faces clad in white clothes with posters in their hands. They started shouting slogans asking the CEO to resign the moment they came in. One woman clad in a saree who claimed to be the mother of the child started crying loudly in the middle of the classroom.
We were totally shocked by the sudden turn in the events. The whole class was dumb folded especially the ones chosen as the senior management. They got into heated arguments as well. This continued for a good 20 minutes after which the outsider group left while we were still in shock. The instructor took charge and then explained to us that we would be in situations like this some years down the line and how to better deal with it instead of getting into heated arguments. The case was concluded and the outsider group was bought in and introduced to us as a drama society from Bhopal.
This was by far the most memorable classroom in my one year at IIM Indore.
THE ABG COMPANY I WOULD LIKE TO WORK FOR
I am interested in the finance domain. So the first ABG company that comes to my mind is Aditya Birla Capital Limited. It works in the various domains of financial services like Mutual Funds, Wealth management, Stocks and Securities, Financing etc. It has been a dream to work in these sectors being a finance enthusiast and a chance to work in one of the leading companies in this sector would definitely be a dream come true for me
