Shri Sonam Wangchuk, Founder, Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh and recipient of the coveted Rolex Award for Enterprise 2016 on whom the popular film '3 Idiots' was loosely based upon, inspired us with I'M The Change Talk, an integral part of the 'Sustainability & Social Responsibility' (SSR) Course. He extolled IMTG's efforts to integrate social responsibility and sustainability in the course curriculum and expressed his delight on the spirit of 'change' that has touched the area of management education in India. He drew parallels to his initiatives in the education domain for the 'underperforming' kids of Ladakh, and emphasized on the present pedagogical philosophy, of 'Doing' leading to 'Knowing'.
The fundamental aim of the SSR course is to envisage students to circumstances that allow them to empathise with the underprivileged, and enable students to experience the 'joy of giving' through hands-on execution of live social projects. "If you give yourself to the hungry And satisfy the desire of the afflicted, Then your light will rise in darkness And your gloom will become like midday".(Bible Quote). It is imperative that IMT is the beacon of education that foresees "the eternal values of professionalism, selflessness and promoting a culture of contribution among the students" as described by IMT Director- Dr. Atish Chattopadhyay. He further added that, "IMTG, as an institution, must leave an impact on its graduates where they learn to live with imperfections and apparent contradiction - graduates who can balance collaboration and competition; who can simultaneously achieve profit with a purpose; who can stand up for their integrity with courage and uphold the 'value for values'.
Kasturi Das, Faculty-in-Charge, Sustainability & Social Responsibility estimated 5,231 people belonging to the bottom strata of the population all across Delhi-NCR was impacted with the 74 social projects that was aligned with one or more Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. This year about 90 SSR Groups will work in more than 50 different categories of projects in partnership with 15 NGO partners. I'M The Change within a year of its commencement has brought laurels to the institute by winning accolades and awards across various forums.
IMTG bagged the Gold Award at 'IMC Award for Excellence in Management Education 2017' held in IIM Lucknow for its SSR initiative under the category 'Developing a Future-ready Curriculum'. I'M The Change received accolades at the United Nations' 2017 Global Forum for Responsible Management Education, which was held in conjunction with the UN Political Forum on Sustainable Development, in New York City, USA.Thus IMTG has embarked on an Enticing journey which is a small footstep for the institution but a giant leap for students to fathom the depth of challenges encountered by the 'bottom of the pyramid' that of abject poverty, illiteracy and neglect unlike oneself.
