IIM Shillong - The Experience

I was exalted the first time when I read the offer letter that I received from IIM Shillong congratulating me on being accepted as a scholar of IIM Shillong, which was then followed by a thought of sheer rigor and labour as a paramount requirement for a scholar to withstand the pressure being presented by the academic stress of an IIM. Over the months that I studied in IIM Shillong, the experience has been a mixed bag of work and fun. There were times when we were so swamped with assignments and group projects that we would be left with only a couple of hours of sleep, whereas there were times when we would have enough free time on our hands that we would go to any nearby trekking locations(closest one would be 45 mins away from our institute) to reset our biological clock. Collective learning is an essential part of adjusting to the rigor brought by the brand that is represented by IIM Shillong. When one studies in IIM Shillong, the student gets exposed to a student community from various educational backgrounds, work experience and expertise.  The educational environment provided by IIM Shillong provides the perfect opportunity for a budding entrepreneur, who might be a fresher, to gain the necessary experience (possible issues that one might face while starting their own business) by interacting with his/her fellow batchmates. The environment and weather of Shillong provides an ideal environment for the scholars to focus on their studies as well as spend some time in any of the nearby tourist locations to relieve some anxiety.

IIM Shillong - Some Crazy People, Now My Batchmates

The first personality that I would like to talk about would be Sourabh Khot. The more I knew about him, the more I started respecting him. I started realising that instead of being very talented, he always used to doubt his abilities and for the same, he was kind of a very reserved person. He was like a typical underdog who hardly believed in himself but later went on to achieve great things. We were also among the group of people who went to study abroad programme in Paris. I asked him there in Paris that why you came here, I mean is it study or just to visit a foreign land or what. The answer surprised me. He said “It’s none of these. The fact that I have never felt so empowered which I am feeling now makes me better about myself. I always used to feel like that I am not worth these things but being here makes me feel good”. Perhaps his highest point here at IIM Shillong would be winning “Steel-A-Thon”, a national level b-school competition under the Tata Steel banner. I still remember that night. He was actually crying, tears of happiness. He said “All my life I felt that I am good for nothing and suddenly this happened. Today I feel like I made everyone proud”.

IIM Shillong - Why I Chose IIM Shillong?

19th May 2018 was a very important day in my life because I got selected for the PGP programme in IIM Shillong which is a major milestone in my career. Since I am a fresher and I did not have much knowledge regarding various career options I could pursue, so I was in a dilemma whether to take up a job in my technical domain or to pursue a management degree. After speaking to various alumnus from reputed B schools and the seniors at IIM Shillong I have realised that technology and management go hand in hand. Also I have realised that if I take up a job in technical side and continue there for few years, my domain would be narrowed down because of core competence and there would be restricted growth in the higher positions. Also a person with mere technical knowledge will not be able to succeed in his domain without management skills. So acquiring these skills is very much necessary for one to succeed in their domain. I chose IIM Shillong because it is one of the top B schools in the country. It will provide me with a platform to interact with the pioneers of the industry, gain insights from them and also learn from their success stories. Due to the optimum size of the batch, peer to peer learning is possible in IIM Shillong.  The courses offered and the activities conducted by the institute will help me in the overall development of my personality. I always had a passion for finance and IIM Shillong is one of the top-notch B Schools offering very good Finance course. And also IIM Shillong has taken up various initiatives towards achieving a sustainable campus. IIM Shillong offers a sustainability foundation course, during which the students are taught the importance of sustainability. I am glad that I have taken the decision to join IIM Shillong. My journey at IIM Shillong, in the beginning, wasn’t that smooth. One reason being that it was very different from my engineering college. There wasn’t much emphasis on time management during my under graduation. Time management is one thing which I have learnt after coming to IIM Shillong. It took some time for me to get accustomed to the rigour of the curriculum. Now I find this rigour to be very challenging and it will definitely help me become a good manager. I feel once I graduate from this college I would become a well-organised person with better managerial and analytical skills. I am gratified that I have decided to join IIM Shillong to pursue my MBA.

What is unique in a campus? Is it the degree, a situation, the activities, the place, the people or just the tag unique? The essence of word unique lies in the fact that, it is, unlike anything else. Nothing is unique in this world when it is seen at a quantum level and compared to somewhere or something, it would definitely match with someone’s or something’s particular characteristic. Same is the case with my campus, when I tried to find uniqueness at a fundamental level I could find none. During the sojourn of finding the uniqueness of campus, an epiphany occurred to me, when a photograph with bird’s eye view of IIM Shillong was found. A sudden realization that uniqueness lies, when an entity is seen as a whole, this exercise was a cake walk then onwards.

To make things even sweeter, one of the treks is organized by our faculty, and it has become an integral part of the Sustainability course that every student studies in IIM Shillong. I still remember the day when we went on the sustainability trek as it was one of the most memorable days in my B-School journey.
