IIM Shillong - The Abode Of Clouds

Far far away from the mainland, there lies a beautiful place, into the mountains and the forests that thrives in between the valleys of river Brahmaputra and river Surma. Even the mainland lies at the farthest corners, to the North Eastern territories of the county – India. The place which is the capital city of “The Abode of Clouds" and commonly known as The Scotland of The East, is the city of Shillong. Within this beautiful, green city lies the evergreen campus of the 7th IIM of the country – IIM Shillong. The college, IIM Shillong, which I’m a PGP participant of since 2017, is popular for its umpteen unique programmes and initiatives, not to mention about its unique sustainability programme which runs for an entire week as the foundation courses on sustainability, there exists countless other uniqueness associated with the institute and its pedagogy. Among all those unique programmes, one which I believe excites me the most and touches my soul is the IIM Shillong Annual Golf Cup. The 10th Season of IIM Shillong Annual Flagship Event, The Golf Cup commenced on 11th of November 2017. Traditionally, the event is inaugurated on Day One with a ceremonial ‘putt’. The inaugural this year was done in presence of Dr. Amitabha De, the director of IIM Shillong and Mr. Shishir Bajoria, the chairman of IIM Shillong. The event witnessed participation of more than 140 golfers, which reflects the gravity and the prominence of the event. What I found astounding was that the golfers were not just from the North Eastern states of the country but were even from the farthest regions of the country. The kind of participation reflected in itself about the seriousness and the significance that the event plays in the lives of the participant golfers. The event is an epitome of the quality that the institute is capable of delivering to not only the county but to the entire world. The event witnessed participation from corporate golfers, that helped in creating an amiable environment for interaction between the corporates and the students. Being a part of the design team of the 10th Season of IIM Shillong Annual Golf Cup, I consider myself fortunate to know about the nitty-gritty of the event. Since I was aware of the names and the background of the corporate golfers participating in the event, I was well prepared to have a relevant conversation with them. What I found to be strikingly impressive is that the interactive sessions in the leisurely settings of the Gleneagles Of The East really adds value to the students, providing them with crucial insights regarding the corporate world. The peaceful green environment of the location leaves beautiful memories relating to the beauty of the entire three days experience. The event was earlier decided as a two day event but was late stretched to three days. The event was organized side by side with Khlurthma, the Annual Fest of IIM Shillong, that witnesses participation from all premier B-Schools across India for various competitions. The 10th season of the Golf Cup ended successfully with the winners being felicitated by the chief guests during the evening dinner at the Meghalaya State convention Centre. The heart-throbbing experience at the event is something that I’m sure will always remain bright and clear in the mind of all the participants.

What Makes IIM Rohtak Campus Unique?

Which is the only IIM in Delhi NCR? That’s right ‘IIM Rohtak.’ Spread across 200 acres IIM Rohtak inaugurated its new campus – our new campus on March 25, 2018 on day of 7th Convocation with Hon’ble Vice President of India, Shri. M Venkaiah Naidu as the chief guest of the event. Approximately 80 kms from Delhi Airport our campus is not like the campus of any other B-school but a City in itself that is why it’s called the Management City. Newly designed campus with capacity of 80 students per class has centrally air-conditioned classroom, admin block and academic block. But let’s start with Hostels where we live as what better place to start with. Hands down the hostels here are one of the best amongst top bschools. Hostels are formed in two clusters with each cluster having a total of 6 Dorms. What’s special about this cluster formation is that the dorms(buildings) have been erected in square shape with badminton court in centre. Students from all dorms come down in the evening after long day’s work playing badminton, cricket and hanging out with each other indulging in recreational activities at that moment you realise it is a big family you are living in and how each of these things have become a quintessential part of your life. That these are the evenings that you will remember after passing out from this beautiful Institute especially your flatmates. Now, each Dorm or building has these 3BHK and 4BHK flats. Yes flats, We live in flats attached bathrooms and kitchen not the regular rooms you find in other hostels. Each dorm has a lift and common room for students where they can watch Television or play table tennis bringing real meaning to Residential campus. A student rune STORE also takes cares of the basic needs of the students and even helped juniors in getting necessary day-to-day things. The classes here are specially designed and are acoustic proof so that sound from one class does not go out as the professor speaks into the mike. The curvature seating makes it possible for each student no matter where he is seating to directly interact with the professor as all students are in the purview of the professor standing on the podium. The 288 seater centrally air-conditioned auditorium is used to host Management summits, TedX, and other events.  These features make IIM Rohtak a self-dependent campus with nearly all things available in the campus itself making it truly the Management City.

A Focus On Analytics - IIM Rohtak

The Indian Institute of management, Rohtak was founded in 2009 as the eighth IIM in the country. It was the first IIM in North India and is the only one in the National Capital Region. Situated less than 80kms from Delhi, IIM Rohtak has progressed rapidly since its foundation and has become one of the fastest growing B School in the country. The proximity to Delhi has also helped the college immensely by enabling guests and corporates from across the country to reach the campus smoothly. The B School was initially being operated from a temporary campus inside another University in the city of Rohtak but has shifted to its permanent campus from the start of this academic year.

Every institute is unique in its own way, but what makes IIM Rohtak unique is not just its culture and rigorous academic schedule that the students have to go through but the various types of events that are organized by the students each and every year. These events does not only include various management, cultural and sports events but also a unique event called as Eatopia. This event that is organized by the students of IIM Rohtak is basically a food competition in which different sections have to compete against each other. Each team decides the menu, theme of the mess, ambience as well as other decorations. To make the competition exiting none of teams disclosed their menu but at the same each team had to serve unique dishes so that the judges who are some of the professors of our college, face no problem.

The Academic Diversity That Wooed Me At IIM Rohtak

While sitting in my hostel room contemplating what I had learnt in the whole day, I came to a startling revelation of the varied viewpoints that our classroom experience provides. Being a computer science engineer with experience in an IT firm, majority of my peers were from a science or an engineering background and our approach to solving a problem was most of the times similar based on numbers, trying to follow a logical trail to find the root of the problem. But it was different here, we had students from diverse backgrounds. There were different approaches to the same problem. While in a marketing class discussing a case, a student with a marketing background just came up with a completely different mindset that I was working with and that changed the whole perspective of mine for the case. There were many incidents when the academic diversity would woo me. But there is this one particular instance that I would like to narrate.

This is what our college is working towards. Our college is a haven for analytics and IT for taking informed business decision. Since, analytics and data management are extremely pertinent in the business world right now, the pedagogy has been adapted in such a manner so as to make students knowledgeable and expert in the analytics domains.
