I joined IIM Shillong on 21 June 2018. This Campus in Clouds stands true to its name. It is a beautiful lush green campus which is set amidst the clouds and the cool breeze keeps us company throughout the day. No day has been dull or simple so far. The days are spent in attending classes and the nights are spent in doing the assignments or completing the pre-reads. Of course, we do have our share of fun on the campus! There are outings, jam sessions, birthday celebrations, and so on. It is a great destination for photography lovers.

IIM Shillong - What Does My Campus Offer?

It was 21st June, 2018, when I entered the campus of Indian Institute of Management, Shillong. From the first look, it looked like a small decorated village, with narrow roads, buildings with gable roof and not everything was at the same level. One of the most strange things is the entrance of the North Block Hostel, where the way for entering to the first floor doesn’t need you to climb stairs and the same goes for even the ground floor as well. The weather was as really damp and cold and as said by locals it remains the same all the year round. It was really odd to observe that majority of the hostel rooms and classrooms have no fans. The overall feel I got was quite different, certainly not the one I anticipated.

I have always been a sports guy and fitness enthusiasts and I am an avid follower of football not only the game but the way it reaches to the heart of million people all around the world e.g. television adds or publicity and hundreds of stories which people associate with it. IT also amazes me how a company like Adidas, Nike and various appraisal bran publicize its product. How brands like Pepsi and Coca-cola connects emotionally with its customers through adds thus increasing my interest in marketing. And institute like IIM Shillong is a perfect place to sharpen my ideas and ability to think creatively. It is this creative culture that brings me to IIM Shillong. There is so much to learn from the peers around me from various background their insights and different vision toward any problem has taught me there are different ways of looking at a problem. For a person in marketing its very important to know and understand the need of a people for this, you have to communicate and listen to different people and as being introvert it has always been my biggest hindrance. I still remember the first few months when I  joined my engineering college at IET Lucknow  as being brought up in Mumbai It took me a lot of time to get used people around me first few months were hard but I learned how to adapt in a new environment on contrary I have been here for only 20 days and it feels like I have been part of a big family . This institute has taught me the importance of communication and is the key for any work to be successful.

IIM Shillong - An Abode In The North-Eastern Region

IIM Shillong being in the terrain it is has put itself into a unique path of leading the region of northeast and help the states of seven sister to capitalize on the untapped talent and opportunities. Its various programmes such as CEDNER - Centre for Development of North Eastern Region, focuses on skill development and entrepreneurship for local communities. As I have formerly co-founded  and worked on a venture of my own before coming here , a different region altogether excites me to gain knowledge of the various aspects and opportunities in this region and how create and extend the ecosystem of self-employment and entrepreneurship in this region which can be a binding factor for the local communities with the rest of India. With Northeast development already a declared agenda of IIM Shillong, its various initiatives such as almost ten different courses for the local communities and even a six month certificate courses for local people open up the gateway for immense development for the communities here. And as for someone who wants to be in the position where one can contribute in policy makings in future, IIM Shillong has the perfect environment and pedagogy for students to learn and even interact with the environment here. IIM Shillong ’s fundamental course on sustainable development for its regular students is unique in its nature. So any student here will have a develop good managerial skills and also have a strong value system, all thanks to the unique curriculum of IIM Shillong.

My journey for IIM Shillong began that very day when I got a confirmation letter from the institute. 19TH May 2018 is the date I will never be able to take out from my system for coming years. The official journey began when I landed on Guwahati airport though. The spark in my eyes was evident enough to be caught by my travel buddy to Shillong (who later became my wing mate and also my study group member). The journey so far has been just about perfect, from inductions to fresher’s to foundation courses to remedial classes and to the official sustainability trek.

After my interview results were out, I was baffled and wanted to know which college I would choose. IIM Shillong attracted me but then if someone would have asked me why IIM Shillong, I would get perplexed. It all became clear after I came here and after 20 days I found my reasons. There are several reasons that make IIM Shillong unique, first and the most important is the right batch size which is around 180 students. We at IIM Shillong are family, where everyone knows everyone and everyone takes care of each another. This premier B-School which has recently completed its ten years recently is now the oldest amongst the new and newest among the old set of IIMs. The college was established with a motive to develop the entrepreneurial skills of the northeast, and the college stays by it. We at IIM Shillong works with the society together by placing dustbins in, organizing cleanliness drives and around the campus to make sure we keep our beautiful campus and the area around it better than we found it.  The college has a unique dedicated foundational course on sustainability which includes various live projects that help in solving real-life problems of the community; this helps the participants understand the importance and need of sustainable solutions in the times to come. IIM Shillong is famous for setting a benchmark when it comes to corporate competitions, which clearly communicates how practically the participants are taught about various business concepts by the eminent and experienced faculty we are fortunate to have. The college engages itself into organizing various activities like the nurturing minds, taking the vision of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam ahead by transforming the society and doing our bit to promote education for all. The college adheres to all the preaching of Dr. Kalam that he passed on to the participants while he was the visiting faculty at the college and tries to implant them to the participants in whichever way he could. The college give utmost independence to the students in organizing various events like the golf cup which is a flagship event of the college along with Khlurthama under the umbrella of various clubs and committees which helps to provide the real-life experience of management and working with people to achieve something more significant than each individual contributing to those events. Not to forget the campus. It’s the campus in clouds, right in the heart of Meghalaya and I am proud to be part of this prestige institute.
